This year I have been experimenting with some different growlights, to see which ones grow the best seedlings. I have a range of price points here, from free old fluorescent shop lights, to T5 LED light bars, to a Mars Hydro full spectrum LED light bar. I was shocked to discover how much fast the seedlings grew with the increased light supplied by the better light options, and how different the light meter readings were from light to light.
Here are some resources for different light options.

I don't know if the same is true in Canada, but in the US, there's a frugal way to buy grow lights: buy them used in areas where cannabis has been legalized. When Cannabis was legalized in Colorado, lots of people tried to get into the business, and lots of them failed. You can now buy barely used grow lights for next to nothing here: HPS lights are nearly free and LED's are far less expensive than new.
Cool video! Love the song
Not many vids of these lights that aren't people growing weed. Mars hydro is still entry level though 😉
Hi, whats the name of that light app?
Maybe you want to share the amount of time you had them turned on for because you started by saying you original fluorescent turned on for 24hrs.
Hey Serina, just found your channel – thanks for the great video. Did you end up growing tomatoes and peppers throughout the winter with your full spectrum light? I'm brand new and about to start an indoor microgreen/lettuce operation in a spare room. Was wondering if things like tomatoes and cucumbers would be possible during Alberta winters and the "full spectrum light" was a great hint I hadn't found yet. Thanks so much!
Hi! How high should the lights be ?
You might try put a timer on for 3/4 the amount of time.
Just an FYI, T8 and T12 bi-pin lamps use the same lamp sockets. You can put new T8 LED lamps in the shop light fixtures as long as you make the necessary wire corrections within the fixture (takes five minutes). Thanks for the vid.
I can't thank you enough. The links you posted are so affordable. Trying to find a low-cost energy efficient lighting system has prevented me from getting started. Problem solved!
Is there any LED-based "full-spectrum" solution?
This may be a stupid question… how would I go about and what type of equipment would I use if I started some greens this fall and wanted to keep growing them inside during the winter?
The big, nice MarsHydro lamp is suppose to hang at 30cm distance for flowering, 45cm for veggiation and even higher for seedlings (I think it was 60cm), the Mars you got is made to even fruit tomatos and chillis with these lamps, so now you have an idea how much usable light that lamp is emitting.
Great info!
It would be awesome to hook a Kill-A-Volt to the different setups and get an accurate energy cost comparison.
Which t5 led lights did you use ?
thanks that was what i really needed to know. i am putting to t-5 4 footers in my apt dinning room about 6 foot off the floor. im in a wheelchair it will be so coolplus there is a heater in the wall so i con dial it all in
That’s a lot of seedlings, oh my, can’t even imagine it.
Can you show the greenhouse, the rooms your in
WOW! This was REALLY helpful. Thank you so much for doing this video! You have a NEW SUBSCRIBER for sure!
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
You do not have any problems! You have just learned more about great lighting versus okay lighting, and I thank you for teaching me and the world about lighting plants and use the information on other growing areas in and out of water.
i have a simple question that i cant seem to find a answer for..do you need to buy the casing (not sure what its called)for the lights or just the bulb..cause i notice it comes with a plug and hinges.
Excellent Video! I am just starting my indoor garden adventure and having a ton of confusion wondering what to do. Now, I know! Thank you!
That light meter needs a piece of paper wrapped around it for more accurite readings doesnt it ?
