Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark ๐

I wish I had enough land to have a big garden like this that I could explore every day ๐
Right now I only have a few potted plants and am planning on making a garden bed, but even the half a dozen plants I have now are enough to keep me occupied for half an hour a day just looking at them and seeing how they're going and watering, etc.
Those water puns at the start, amazing!

This is very useful and interesting. It sounds difficult. I really haven't successfully grown anything yet. Still on a very small scale, but planning on building some raised beds soon.
I keep my garden healthy by making a homemade solution of fertilizer. All you need is…
5gal bucket
Manure(I use rabbit)
Grass clippings
2-3 tbsp Epsom salt
Optional: 1/2cup of tomato and vegetable food.
Let it sit covered up for at least a week and dilute when using it.

Put onion and garlic skins in a jar with water, let sit a few days, then spray the stinky onion water on the plants being nibbled by critters. They will stop eating them and you get beautiful new growth. 100% organic and free!
Another way is to remove or pluck weeds
