VIDEO: Growing and Planting Ginger This Spring

How To Grow And Plant Ginger In Your Spring Garden! Ginger is so easy to sprout, given the right conditions. The rhizomes of this plant are not only tasty and necessary in numerous recipes, but they can also be sprouted to grow entirely new Ginger plants, for free! In the previous video, we sprouted and rooted Ginger tubers from the grocery store and potted them up at the end of winter. In this video, the weather has warmed up and we can now plant the growing ginger outside in raised beds.

This is a great project for growing indoors and for teaching kids how things grow, as well as the vegetative life cycles of root and shoot development. One of the best indoor projects that you gardeners can do as we wait for our garden beds and plots to thaw outside.

As a fully tropical plant, Ginger needs supplemental heat if you live in temperate regions or if your indoor temperatures are below 80F. Sprouting usually takes place within a week with viable bulbs, although the progress of growth at this stage can vary quite a bit. One sprouted, it can be grown anywhere, but as it is too cold outside, we grew ours in pots. Now that the weather is warm enough, let’s plant them in the garden, no-till style, as always!

  2. Hey @theripetomatofarms can you please tell me why my cilantro seeds aren’t sprouting and why doesn’t my seedling heat mat heat up my water and soil( it’s not broken) pls help

  3. This is absolutely the way I need to go or ….at least be given “permission “ to not till! I have been keeping a set of ginger going since my mom gave it to me 40 years ago! Oi live in the South and I’ve always grown it for the beautiful scent of the blooms and never thought about using it in my recipes. I love your garden and thank you for making such an easy to follow video!

  4. Hello, i always have a little problem with ginger. When the plant is about one feet tall, it begins to make green leaves with yellow and it dries later. At some point the plant only makes dry leaves. And sometimes a leave with some green. What could this be?

  5. I eat dandelions. In fact you can buy organic ones by the pound at my local grocery store (they are loved by Europeans). Luckily my back yard is full of healthy organic pesticide free, lead free dandelions. Just a thought – even though they are an invasive “weed” species are as important a “super food” as the ginger is.
I am currently growing bok choy, lemon grass, carrots and white onions for the discarded ends, in water. Even with 4 inches of snow predicted for this evening, it’s fun to grow edibles indoors! I must try the ginger too.

  6. I'm getting some grow bulbs for using inside until weather is better outdoors. Will I still need to get a heat mat for starting seeds if I use grow bulbs? Also, how do you know when you can use the ginger roots after you have the plants growing? Do you just harvest them in the fall? Do the ginger roots freeze during winter, so they must be dug up and replanted in the spring? Thanks.

  7. I really like you videos but you don't really finish them off. I would like to see you harvest the ginger. How do you know when it's ready? What does it really look like when it's done growing. The same with your pineapple video and avaocado video. Do you really get a pineapple and an avocado or just a plant?

  8. Love your videos! My son and I live in Langford so these vids are extremely helpful. Was wondering if you have ever tried growing galangal or tumeric root?
    Cheers

  9. Is there another way or alternative for a hot mat u put the ginger tray on? I hav the tray & top cover but not hot mat & I'll be growing them outside being that it's real hot out out.
