In this video, I show how you can fill a raised vegetable garden bed and save money on soil costs! In this example, I filled my raised garden bed practically for free!

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
How about the small pot. Could you show How can we make the potting mix please. Thanks mate

How do you keep gophers out?
what did you use to build the garden beds?
One thing I learnt, things that grow up don’t need much space below so fill with as much trimmings, crap dirt etc. Things that grow down need good space below so don’t over fill. Unfortunately our potatoes suffered this year due to filling too much and a really wet start to the season.
Just what i was looking for….got a backyard full of old tree roots,so raised beds are the go,thanks for all your hard earned advice.
My wife thought worms were bad and used to take them out of the soil,i explained to her how they broke down organic plants and bugs and turned them into nutrients for plants, and showed her your videos….now she gathers them up and puts them around her favourite plants….thanks Mark.
I learned a lot of helpful information. I now have to tell my boys that I want raised beds and see their expression.
This guy needs a skid steer loader. Filling a big bed like that with shovel and wheelbarrow is a lot of work.
The disgusted pipe especially welcome because belt cytologically last opposite a chunky beech. earsplitting, blushing pea
The veggies are worms indigenous to australia? We don't have them in the wilds of Arizona.
Some of those worms look like Asian jumping worms. The are not a desirable worm.
I love your blog. I have a ranch in SoCal, in San Diego County, in the foot hills. Many of your tips work here as well. On the raised bed with the wood siding, how deep did you put your 4x4s?
What did you use for the modular beds? I’ve wanted to build my own raised beds like that without the bottom but don’t know what material to use
Full Thumbs Up here! 😀
Good thing I saw your video.. I would have filled with high quality soil from a nursery.. Which would have cost an arm n a leg…Thank you for sharing..
I,like your every one videos. ….because i think you are a honest adviser for grading tips … thanks
G’day Mark. I lost you over Winter. It’s great to see you back on here. I’m in the early stages of planting more Vegies. Tomatoes, Rhubarb. Thyme , Basil . For now. We’ve had a BIG heap of rain here in THE WEST this Winter.
what if I don't have access to a wood supply? I have 2 yrs of garden waste in several bags – is that sufficient or should I buy some wood just for this?
Like your one eye symbols do ya mate, good luck, when you find yourself in hell mate just remember, you put a massive effort into putting yourself there, the way to avoid going there is so easy, but you idiots think you are full of knowledge, I know secret hand shakes and have secret knowledge lol, talk about being full of pride and up yourselves, what a pathetic joke, absolute loser's.
I am building two big raised bed and was about to order 10 big bags of top soil and they are not cheap but I have lots of vegetable roots to take it to garden recycling center to dump.
After seeing this I only need to order about 5 bags.
