VIDEO: Growing Corn – Part 3 Planting

Growing Corn From Early Starter Plants…Part 3 Planting, Finally! In this video, we continue on with growing our corn early so that we can get a head start on spring. Part 3 of the 3-part series focuses on what we do with our corn plants after they have already germinated, transitioned to their larger intermediate pots, and are ready for summer garden planting!

Known as a poor transplanter, corn is usually direct seeded, even here in Canada. However, with a finite warm growing period, if you want corn early, you gotta seed corn early. Well, we seeded our corn about 7 weeks ago and it germinated and grew FAST. They are already 20-24 inches tall and it is time to move them on to the actual garden for summer.

Corn, Once The Garden Darling. One of the most popular crops of past backyard gardens, corn has fallen out of favor recently. Large, cheap to buy at the grocery store, and a bit tricky during pollination time as you need several plants to ensure healthy ears. Despite all that, a HIGHLY rewarding crop to grow in this day, during these times.

  2. You said in your video that the grass clippings provided nitrogen for the corn; my understanding is the grass will take nitrogen to break down. To counter this you need to provide additional nitrogen in some form. Thanks for your tips. I have just discovered your channel:-)

  3. Hello,
I’m so jealous! I am in Florida and just had to pull my corn up. I started from seeds. By the time my plants were a little over 1’ tall they were being destroyed my bugs inside the stalks. I don’t want to give up…..help!

  4. I want to start growing stuff now am I to late….I will be going to Ohio for the summer in two weeks ..what can I start here before I leave and take with me. I have a great way to garden I can do. Thank you

  5. What was the results of your corn planting this year? Usually most get them up to knee high and that is where they run into problems. Corn needs hilling with soil up to 12" around the stalk at the knee high stage along with a very heavy application of high nitrogen fertilizer, blood meal if you are on the organic route. Water them heavily daily to keep the ground moist, not excessively wet unless you have daily high 80-90°F temps. When the corn tassles, apply another heavy application of high nitrogen fertilizer or blood meal to carry them through the production cycle for high quality ears of sweet corn! Harvest when the corn is at its highest sugar content when the silks turn fully dark brown, not light brown, if they turn black they are declining in sugar content.

  6. I just planted my corn in 4” cardboard containers last night. Just curious how long it will take for the corn to germinate and pop up out of the soil? How wet do you keep corn seedlings?

  7. Hi there, I am doing a first time growing corn in my backyard in Ontario, Canada.
Love your calm way of explaining every step. Thanks
As I said first timer for growing anything in my backyard in ground. I have my garden bed ready with soil and hen manure and covered it with weed sheet. I started from seeds in house and now have been keeping my corn plants out at the moment to get used to and planning to put them in ground this weekend. Should I just cut whole in the weed sheet and put my plants in the ground and cover them with more compost around and them mulch with fresh grass cuttings.
Just not sure if I am on the right track of skipping newspaper because of weed sheet. Will that do the same thing. I am also growing watermelon, zucchini, tomatoes and some peppers in the same garden bed. Your advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

  8. what date did u start the seeds, what day did u first transpland and date for second transplant, then what day did u plant outside? what day did u crop? how many days did seeds say they take to grow seed to harvest?

  9. one huge flaw for the live grass mulch is any weed seeds in there will eventually grow, making the newspaper mulch below basically useless.

  10. Great series and I love your videos! I live in an apartment with a balcony atm… do u think I could grow 2 x large potted plants of corn to pollinate each other or will it due if not in ground? Thank you 🙂
