We experienced a similar situation. My husband surprised me with a beautiful white and grey American Bulldog puppy. We already had two other dogs at the time, plus another on the same property. She seems to fit is very well at first. She was very good with the kids and, despite being ment for my companionship, she imprinted heavily on my husband, and he on her.
Then a few months in, my chocolate lab/border collie mix began to get very possessive of me and they would fight and injure each other if they were in the same room. Soon after, the new girl began to get very aggressive toward all the dogs on the property and nearly ate my 5 lb chihuahua….
Needless to say, we had to put her down this time last year. It still feels like an ice pick to the chest when I think about it. She was such a sweet girl aside from that aggression toward other dogs. Taking sweet Luna to the Humane Society knowing that she would not be able to be put up for adoption was a hard thing to do. I miss her so much, and, worse, my 6 year old daughter had become very attached to Luna and still cries sometimes, missing her.
I always think about what we should have done….could we have done better by getting some training for Luna, or just said no to taking her home that day….maybe she would still be frolicking through the snow drifts in hot pursuit of a tennis ball, in a happy home somewhere.
Life is hard. Having been taken to court over "animal cruelty" after an emergency bathroom break where I left my other two dogs in the car for about 5 minutes, the guilt over Luna is compounded 7 fold. I could have done more.
HUGS Unfortunately, these things do happen on a farm. You're animals are so well treated.
Livestock – alive today. Tomorrow? Who knows? You do your best, you learn. You have learned so much. Thank you for sharing now we've learned too. God bless you & heal your spirit.

So sorry, Patara. Peacocks are beautiful birds. It’s so hard to lose our loved pets. I hope you have worked through your guilt. You can’t do many things at one time.. who knew they could fly like that? Give yourself a hug. You’re awesome.

We had a situation like that too. We got our daughter a lab mix puppy. We lived far off the road. He was loose and an outside dog. We went to church and when we got home he had found a styrofoam ball and chewed on it. He choked on a piece of styrofoam. We kicked ourselves for not penning him up or making sure there was nothing he could hurt himself. It happens! That sounds harsh but farm life is not always successful. Homesteading takes a tough skin sometimes. You are amazing and keep up the good work.

We all have losses. Many a chicken I lost from old age but still cried. You have to forgive yourself and let it go. Just found you and you are a real blessing to so many. When we moved my little sweet maxi went under the fence (just moved in) and he went for a walk by the freeway where he was instantly killed. It was a tough hit. I didn’t have any way of knowing. Two special needs children, court battle, two new horses & in our late 40’s and 50’s. And it’s listening to your spirit….we must learn to listen to the Holy Spirit and He communes with our spirit. Then we must obey. I am thankful even though we lost Maximillion a little solid brown chihuahua mix, lovable never barked sweetest dog you met we will be together again. I sure do miss him…. But I had to forgive myself for what I didn’t know or have power over and accept my humanity. God bless you. I am a native Tennessee girl but live in Oklahoma want to move but don’t know where. Have 3 undeveloped acres with brick house and well water. Now in my 60’s and hubby is 71. Thinking about Tennessee and my roots. God bless you and your family.
