  1. I have good crops of volunteer Elephant garlic, in dominantly clay soil. They make HUGE cloves, but my question is…since these are volunteers from dropped seed, as I don't cut off blooms, how on earth do these plants wind up 6-8 inches deep in mostly clay soil????

  2. Hi Luke
I live in zone 3B, very cold area. I really want to grow garlic this fall… can I use grass clippings and dried leaves to mulch? When should I mulch? Do I need to water the soil after I plant them? Thx you in advance

  3. I love how excited you get as if your still a new grower. I have only been growing for about 2 years since we bought our house. I have started orange trees from seed and always am so excited to see what grows even though it drives my husband crazy because I always show him pictures. I love your videos.

  4. In Permaculture gardening, you learn to also strategically place your garlic, onions, & chives around your plants that you need to deter pests from the most. I border all my gardening areas with garlic and onions. They WILL grow just about everywhere. I get heads this size in Missouri (with our really hard nasty clay soil) in areas wehre the sopil has not been ammended with anything. I only put them in ammended beds when they are there specifically as a pets deterent. They don't even need all that soile ammending.

  5. Hello MIgardener, I am planting garlic in 30 inch long plastic containers in potting soil mixed with compost and trifecta plus. I am in zone 6a. Do you think the plastic containers will work over the winter? Thank you in advance for your response.

  6. Planting my 2020 garlic in mid October at 2" spacing. I live in the Philadelphia area, so similar climate to your garden. Thanks for the helpful videos. Will harvest in 2021, probably in July. I always watch your videos several times.

  7. Do you always plant all your garlic together? Does this give you a better yield? I was thinking I needed to use garlic for companion planting to ward off bugs near my tomatoes so I didn't think I would use a whole bed for my garlic…but now I am not sure!?!?!

  8. Last yr I try new think, I plant many little florets sets and corner ,you know elephant garlic gets on roots, also I have very small full heads and I plant them hole heads. So I’m in garden today all coming, looking good,we’ll see at end of the season.I’m in Vermont zone 4-5, only hard neck garlic here. Onions coming also from last yr, hope they grow bigger. Also I making pesto from scapes and marinade them, sooo super good.
One think I like to try this fall with garlic is I see on one Russian site it’s call 2 tier planting garlic, you put one clove little dipping and put second on top,so when you harvest they both grow good size. You may try and see if you like, I’m going to try this fall definitely.

  9. It's wonderful seeing how happy you are with your harvest! I planted garlic for the first time last November in zone 4b – I'm praying for a bountiful harvest as well! Planted a hard-neck variety. So far the greens sure do look beautiful so we'll see!

  10. Great job! Does it make sense to harvest both soft neck and hard necks in a Zone 5 A because we have short, very humid summer seasons up here but also cool spring and autumn season as well. Also, does it make any difference if we harvest during a certain time of the day like early morning hours or late afternoon time ?
    Thank you!
