In this video, I show why you don’t need to buy a garden kneeler if you grow plants in a raised bed garden instead.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
Mark, I am looking for a place to call my own and start my own self-sufficiency. Any tips on choosing land or a growing zone?
I use knee kickers from neoprene packaging that I saved from the landfill. I lay down 3 kickers in pathways which are wood chips. It helps me from having to stand up so often. I lay 3 in a row down pathway.
So glad you’re still pumping out these epic videos. You’re a legend at gardening!
I am raising huge gardens this year, and got chickens. I LOVE your videos. Very helpful.
Your humor is awesome! Thank you for sharing
No wonder you got such nice thighs.
You know your game buddy. And, you are funny too. All the best and keep posting.
@Self Sufficient Me
You don't knee for anything! Well well well, all known great prophets of God felt down on their face before the God.
So you can fall down on your face before the God.
Awesome advice especially for a beginner like me. .. Will be striving towards being a Stand up gardener after watching this. Thank u
it's incredible how many plants you fit into each bed.
Him: "we have many possums.."
Me *watching, squinting*: "WTF is that?! That's not a possum! Oh wait, Australian possums"
I've done lasagna gardening (in ground) and gotta say it's the best. The walkways were always perfect, never needed weeding & everywhere you dug to plant was insanely rich.
Mark, we are moving from Victoria to Cairns in QLD. Is this similar to the temperament you're in? My hubby and I are taking a lot of tips from your videos, they're fantastic!
Have you heard of Ollas watering? I am going to try it in my first raised bed. Love the video and information. It was you that made me stand up and go I can do this. (On a small scale first lol)
Your just awesome
how to get those metal tub?
I love it!
Still in the American army who are also tearing up my knees. Raised planters planned for later but for now I put on my military issued knee pads to get down in the dirt lol!!
kneeling pad for $20 VS $1000's for sleeps / wood for raised beds and all the soil to build it all up.
$20 sounds better to me.
I find it very hard on my back filling or digging in raised garden beds. Also when in ground the temperature and moisture levels are more balanced. Not to mention being more interconnected with nature with fungal networks forming symbiotic relationships. Mostly I squat or sit when needing to get closer to plant level. I find it more comfortable than standing and find that raised beds restrict my movement and makes me more likely to injure my back. I guess there are pros and cons to each and it depends on the individual.
Hey yo again.. Love you for all the suggestions.. my new house area is slightly inclined/sloped right now.. but when I do fix the ground level to be same, I will for sure have raised garden beds, like everywhere.
Hey Mark, where I live, we have lots of voles, mice, and wood rats that love to burrow under and up into my compost bins. Do you ever have a problem with small animals trying to burrow under and up into your Birdies raised beds ?? I was thinking of maybe putting down a layer of square cement pavers first to head off the problem on my new Birdies beds.
I live in the southern US where the temps often get to 100 F. Have you had trouble with the metal sides on the raised beds transferring too much heat to the roots?
Just wondering if your using the Birdies 6 in 1 or 8 in 1 tall units. Great Video.
How much power from the solar panels? Enough to boil a kettle for a brew. ????
