Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
So you don't thin out but then you do? Could you be more clear, please?
I LOVE BEETS.
Just a tip for future reference, may help you put less effort into the beets however achieve same result. The size of your raised beds are enough to sustain beets for 3/4/5 seasons. They don’t need to be as wet as you’re seeming to keep them, understand the top inch dry doesn’t mean the whole raised bed isn’t moist the next 3 foot down, especially if you’ve added material to hold moisture. Overwatering will however cause you to need to add more amendments/nutrients within the next year or so as you’ll wash it all down through the raised bed, leaving only the drained sandy loamy ish bits of sand/dirt.
So tip, understand what moisture is, then you won’t have the issue of needing to water BEETS everyday, as well as re amending your soil for BEETS, so often. My point here is that you’re growing BEETS, one of the easiest things to grow, simplify it a bit, it WILL actually save you time and effort with this
The leaves are delicious!
Mine haven't grown much since I planted them in late autumn. 🙁
Mark- how deep does my soil need to be?
does he know beet leaves have like 2-3x more potassium and 80% of humans today are deficient in potassium. its also great for those wit high bp
Thanks for these tips. Fingers crossed I can harvest mine now although it is 5 months since they were planted in SE UK
No matter the video age, your bubbly personality always shines through! LOVE IT!

Thanks Mark. I like beets but haven’t had success growing them. Will try your suggestions and see if I can do better. Love when you show your chickens.
I plant my first garden a few weeks ago, I thought I Plat a bunch of radish ,but I check the seeds and they are beats haha
When I first started growing beetroot a few years ago I regularly got nice sized beets golf ball up to tennis ball size. But for some reason the last few years no matter what advice I follow I get zero beets or they are so small they are not worth keeping. The plant grows ok but no beets
All seeing eye t-shirt and logo!!!?? No thank you!!
Enjoyable, Informative, Love the Dad-Puns! Lol
how they can grow better in clusters?
Love mine in butter, sweetener, lemon juice (a bit) and corn starch and a bit of water. Cook till the sauce thickens!!!
