VIDEO: How To Grow Sweet Potatoes, Growing Slips! – Part 1 of 3

Growing Your Own Sweet Potatoes Starts With First Growing The Slips. Sweet Potatoes are not like regular Potatoes and are in fact only distantly related. Instead of planting chunks of the tuber in hopes that the “eyes” will sprout, Sweet Potato growers sprout the shoot end of the tuber with a mass of new vines known as “slips”.

From these slips, unlimited new Sweet Potatoes can be grown. Now, these guys are tropical and any soil temperatures below 60F will not be tolerated. I live in Canada, so I’ll be starting my slips indoors, making well-rooted starter plants, and then in Video #2, I’ll be transitioning them into larger (very large) pots to grow indoors. Should be a fun 3-part series, and up until now I’ve never seen anyone try to grow Sweet Potatoes indoors!

Regrowing veggies from the veggies themselves is super fun, super easy, and super self sufficient!

  2. Planting sweet potato slips brought me to your channel. Your way of tutoring are very clear and fun. I will be watching your other videos. By the way, I also live in Toronto.

  3. Have you finished your series for sweet potatoes? I looked for the second and third parts. I saw the multitude of topics you posted and found nothing. Disappointed here and did not subscribe.

  4. A link to part 2 would be great, im wasting time looking for it. Please always put a link to the playlist or the next video in description, YouTube doesn't do it for you.

  5. I’ve been crushing up one of my potassium pills and add that to a gallon of water and I use bone meal under all my plants and for plants that like nitrogen I use urea in the water 1 tbls to that gallon of water or I add blood meal to the hole

  6. Just cause your in Canada doesn’t meant you can’t grow stuff indoors in tubs totes buckets potato grow bags whatever . I got out one of my old books on homesteading and it mentioned growing stuff like beets carrots herbs tomatoes peppers etc for the root crops pick small varieties same with tomatoes pick patio types . Don’t know if you are aware of it but peppers and tomatoes are perennials in warm humid climates to they can be acclimated to indoors from the garden opposite of gardening them off . Just need to keep humidity up with a humidifier or circulating water pump or decorative waterfall . If you have enough property u can build a heated greanhouse . Just be aware when planting blossoming plants you will need to hand pollinate them with a soft bristle brush

  7. I have finally gotten a couple of shoots that i have moved into water for a few weeks. Took forever to get the potatoes to grow nodes. Worked best leaving them in some soil in the window.
