Here in Germany peat moss might get banned soon for ecological reasons.
Soil contains algae, archae and viruses as well which are not fully scientifically understood as well. As a graduated biologist I work with vermicompost.
you are a teacher, perhaps not by trade but that is what you are. a very good teacher. pleas write a book on your practices. it should sell well.
Excellent information.

I think you need to stress that growing in soil v straight compost is very different. Soil & compost are terms often used by gardeners interchangeably. There is a qualitative difference.
Gardeners who grow in staight compost are dependent on yet more compost and amendments because the are not building soil life.
It's like an addiction they don't know they have because they are convinced compost is "soil" by supposed experts or popular garden mystics who don't know themselves that soil (dirt) is some percentage mix of sand, silt & clay.
Your soil series from a few years ago was very good. Don't hesitate to provide links back to it.
Thanks again Mark. I'm amazed at how so many people cannot get their heads around not using chemical fertilizers. It's like they think nothing will grow without adding a man made product. My wife and I started a gardening group at our church and I'm looking forward to sharing this series with them.
How did the experiment with planting the tomatoes outside a bit later than normal this year?
Thank you for the pictures. I just bought a house with a big back yard. We are in zone 6a. So l know nothing about worms or castings. My soil is hard clay.
Cudos Mark, you are a natural born teacher. I have learnt so much from you about what is/should be in our soil and how to improve our soil organically.
Mark, could you please out the link that opens when trying to copy to save to my gardening file. After copying and pasting the link it opens to another channel.
Chickens use to be allowed in East St Louis IL and the Mississippi River soil was excellent.
Looking forward to hearing more about this
Did you switch from council dumptrucks delivering tonnes of leaves to cover crops, in order to maintain the fertiity on your farm? Sorry to ask but all those different opinions in the media confuse me. Vergepermaculture channel is now dumping tonnes of manures on his newly acquired estate in order to enrich his soils that were depleted by growing hay and he refered to a peak phosphate crisis imminent.I have an opinion about him that I will not disclose here..
Stay safe, best wishes from Holland
Great information that even I can understand. Thank you for sharing and teaching us the science behind organic gardening.
do you think its possible for the plant to take minerals from rocks and then multiply them so it grows more soil? probably a silly question but ive just always wondered if you could grow soil (not compost)
it gets dry here in the growing season, maybe thats why i cant get it to work, the chlorine in the water cant help either
excellent
SCIENCE! I love it! Where did you study? I take it you majored in soil science.
Dr. Elaine Ingham calls it the "Poop Loop":)
Thanks great way to explain all this
Great job thanks
Im aware of this process myself but the way you explained it the best ive heard thanks
I raise rabbits and love the fertilizer
We use bedding and get mushrooms growing because of the bedding and hay
Thank you.
Mark, Miss Pam from Rose Red Homestead recommended you to her audience. She suggested if we wanted to know more or go more indepth with science to come and subscribe to your channel.
