We are building a heated raised bed to grow cold hardy vegetables like spinach, kale, arugula, radishes, and others all winter long.

Here is a link to the heated cable via amazon But most local hardware stores should carry it—> https://amzn.to/32StYND
great idea!!!
about 4 or 5 cents per hour to operate – is it worth the cost ???
Energy cost per produce production would be very helpful. If we're growing food for our personal growth vs planetary growth and 7 generations ahead, is this viable?
You can make a great heated table for sprouting seeds with this also. Fill a open topped table with gravel and bury the cable about 2 inches deep in it. it replaces about 20 plug in heat matts.
A heat pump would be cheaper in the long run.
I'll be interested to see how it works. I think in Missouri where I am, heating is probably not necessary. But this is my first year trying winter growing. I have a LOT of radishes. 😉
Wow , the heading got me really interested to WATCH !!!!
You HAVE the coolest ideas and experiments !!!!
Do you start this with seedlings or from seed?
I use woodchips to keep my beds warm, do you think that is enough insulation Luke?
Whoa, my brain just expanded. Visions of gardens in NY in January.
If you have time, would like to see a follow-up video as it brings up some questions…
1) What is the monthly electric cost (for you)
2) If there is a thermostat on the line, what is the temperature the soil needs to be? 0C/32F or higher?
3) should the hoop house connect to the wood of the bed or surround the entire bed so the wood is not cold?
4) Any other plants that will grow?
Cool! Er… I mean Hot idea!
Are you aware that roundup is advertised before your video and they claim their product is safe to use?
Well I did it myself since we still have nice 50 degree days still in Nebraska. I planted kale lettuce spinach and radish. Do you think with the hoop house it will hold heat in below zero weather?
Did you use seed or starts?
Luke any updates to show? Did you get in growth?
So….today is 12/25………………progress report?
It work so well I try it here in Quebec Canada zone 5
Could this work for strawberries in a hooped greenhouse, and get year round production? We have a 14’x16’ hoop house that’s not heated…
Luke, they make thermostat controlled soil warming cables you should look at, just google 'jumpstart cable' there are other brands as well may be more root friendly
I just completed building my heated bed. Thank you for the information.
I just wanted to stop by and say I love your videos! Your enthusiasm really shows and I can tell you love and are passionate about what you do. Keep it up, I have been learning so much from you.
In my cold greenhouse, I used cement mixing tubs as beds, sitting on 5 gallon pails filled with water as a passive thermal reservoir.
How is this working out so far?
So what was the soil temp you achieved? Gutter deicer only has to heat to >32F. Garden soil needs to be >60F.
Every method to winterize peppers and eggplants seems to involve bringing inside which I cannot do. I will try your exciting method with 120 ft deicing cable under the plant cover. Hope it works!
