You spoke directly into my heart in this vlog. I'm in my waiting room, learning and learning. My husband and I have started planning for the future, which includes my homestead dream (2-4 more years). He just inquired today about what I will do as I get older and the aches and pains begin to interfere with the daily farm chores. I will have support and my plan was to scale back and/or ask for help. But now…I will also remember the classroom, the longing, and the blessing that is getting to do those chores, and will power through. I can do hard things. You continue to be such a huge source of hope and inspiration! Thank you.
It’s hard to tell from that brief non-closeup of the plant you’re trying to get I.d. But it looks awfully likeMonarda “BeeBalm”. Did you by chance plant that? It’s a perennial herb. Hummingbirds love it, you can use in tea, etc. just in case you didn’t know. It actually has an interesting history in America you can google. I hope that helps. Just my two cents.
Daaammmmmnnn. 3 inches of rain in a day is what we get here in a year….I am familiar with irrigation. hahahaha
Man, seeing your high tunnel gives me warm fuzzies. We are in the early stages of transitioning from 9-5 jobs to full time farming, but it still feels so far away. I dream of the day I can have a huge high tunnel like that and spend my days working in the dirt
I trellis my squash up a single pole, and I don't have any problems with pests or mildews.
have you tried cover crops?
Front of my dads hat was always dirty from putting his head against the goats side while he milked. He loved his Saanens.
I love the conversations you have with us when you milk your goats
The old folks would say, "You can water all you want, but there is nothing like a rain".
Soaker hoses are always sort of curved and the water runs down about 3 ft of a curve and then dripping off at the bottom of the curve, so you have a soggy area and 3 ft of dry space between each soggy area. I like the drip tape that drips on 6" on center. Lay it in S-shaped curves to get water to all parts of the bed. I spiral mine in 4 ft x 8 ft beds.
How long does it take to milk one goat?
How much soap per gallon of water? if someone could help me I would really appreciate it !!
That one day when the trees have a green haze they didn't have the day before… I call it The Greening, I watch for it every year and it just makes my heart happy!
Hey Jess! Received your book from AMAZON this past week. Wow! It is beautifully produced. A really quality paperback product. I arrived in a clear plastic sleeve and even though my USPS carrier jammed it into my mailbox, the book survived with no damage. I'm looking forward to reading it. You should be really pleased at how it turned out! Thanks for the investment of time you put into helping me become more knowledgeable about the wildly fascinating world of growing a great garden.
Without fail, when I see Bear's face in a video I involuntarily say "awww Bay-er." He's just got the sweetest face!
Oh Jess, you just so touched on the secret to life….dream the dream you want, so once you get it you realize it! So many YouTube channels lead people to believe it is all so easy, but I LOVE that you are honest and up front about the struggles
I'm on the very very small scale for now, no animals, just under an acre as as many plants and vegetables as I can possibly manage. We just moved to this property but I already keep talking about our "chicken house" which will be our next property. Picking up some apple trees this weekend, I'm going to make sure that this property is one that produces food forever even if I'm not here forever. <3
Do you save rain water for high tunnel I know you have a well but rain really makes healthy planet which in turn makes healthy ground right? Your the best Stewart of the land
Can you tell me what you put on your walk ways in between the beds. Thanks
I live here up by Green Bay, Wisconsin zone 5a 120 day season. I have 2-3 foot high garden boxes covering 5'x6' ground space. Ive only had them a couple of years cause my grandson asked me to garden, witch I loved the idea. I plan to build a greenhouse with the 27 triple pained glass windows I stored in my sled hopefully sometime this year. Anywho the question I want to know is the quantity /ratio amounts of amending my up gardens? The first year was 100% local compost, got bolite or root rotten. So year 2 I mixed 50/50 top soil & manard, produced tomatoes, acorn, beets, radishes, cucumbers & some onions but green pepper failed. So I'm wondering cause my yeilds were very small what should I do in the garden soil to get more? Oh I Love watching your family farm grow and I'm totally excited to watch the big move this fall. Thank you much for your tutorials from here in dairy land USA…
That calendula is amazing and the high tunnel looks ready for some seeds and seedlings.
At the age of 77 my dreams of homesteading is behind me…I do garden and have chickens but that is all I am capable of now a days…
Have you tried the AgroThrive liquid fertilizers? Advertised as 'feeding the soil'.
