Snow Is Good For Your Garden! While it may seem like a freezing cold setback for your plants, a thick, fluffy blanket of snow is actually the opposite. In temperate regions, this layer of the winter white stuff is a welcome sight for veteran gardeners.
In this video, I’ll show you 5 reasons why snow is a good thing for your garden and why nature times this even perfectly and how your crops have adapted to it.
2022 is most definitely the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track! For more information on all your gardening questions, check out my other videos!:

So should I move my blueberry and strawberry plants in containers out of my garage to outside to get snow? I live in Michigan. I moved them inside because our winters can be super cold, negative temps are not unusual.
We don't get snowfall AT ALL . . . XD
My garden 100% agrees with you, but my old retired joints don't LOL. This was solid info, a great start for 2022 .Thanks for sharing. A happy, safe, and healthy new year to you and your family! I'll be tuned in for more. Take care!
Im growing some bonsai trees in my house this winter and they are just sprouting, but iv noticed some white mold on top of the soil. Is this harmful? Do you know how to get rid of it?

Snow would help the soil retain moisture, hence less chance of becoming hydrophobic in the warmer months.
I cannot wait until gardening season! Miss it so much.
Great video! Important info for folks to understand. Some plants benefit from more snow piled on them. In my humid, wet, cold, snowy z5 SE Vermont climate Mediterranean hardy plants like lavender are in danger of being too wet in winter. I’ve been piling snow on top of all of my lavenders as soon as the first snow falls. So the ensuing thaws and rains don’t drench the lavender, which hates it. By spring, when the snow melts off, the lavender is still blue/green leaves alive. I then give it a massive haircut early spring, make tea with the leaves and the lavender responds by growing new bushy growth instead of turning woody. I picked up this tip somewhere and it’s been very helpful! Also adding sand, rocks, drainage to the soil which I hill up so the lavender never sits in water. And not watering it ever.
I have a fair bit of insulating snow. I hope it's enough that my blackberries survive the -28c weather we have had. I guess I should have sown my poppy seeds that fall. Do you think sowing them on the snow will work? Thanks for another timely informative video.
Great video. The snow makes your garden beautiful. I'm jealous because here in N-W UK snow is now a rarity due to global warming. When I was a kid 60 years ago we had regular falls each winter.
Happy New Gardening
Where I live in central WA, we have snow. But, in previous years, it would warm up in January or February, the snow would melt, dormant plants would start waking up. Some would even break through the ground. Then it would get cold again and we'd get more snow. I've seen what happens to the tulips if the get tricked into thinking it's Spring. Even before blooming, the tulips will freeze and won't come back during the Spring when they are supposed to bloom.
There is another benefit of snow in the yard, if not the garden. But, it's just a benefit for my dog. He will dive into a pile of fluffy snow and roll around in it. To me, it seems like he's making his version of snow angels. But, he's 11 years old now, when we take him out, he wants to do his business and get back in as quickly as possible. But, I still seem him looking at the snow and the gears in his head are contemplating the snow.Should he or shouldn't he… .
A Pup Sighting oh Yeah! Thanks for the video man.
I'm thankful for the blanket of snow protecting my soil and perennials. You don't see that much snow too often I would guess. Fun video to watch. Thanks for sharing!
Great video, Jeff! I was unsure if my evergreen shrubs would be OK getting buried in snow in this -40⁰C windchill Calgary winter. We'll see in the spring.
Thank you Jeff! Great class todsy
Jeff, you paint a rosy picture on a cold January day. Eases the pain waiting for spring. I’ll make popcorn and wait for your next video. Thanks
