  1. Initially thinking that the clip light approach would be easily adjustable and uses "standard" socket GROW LEDs that could be easily replaced, but concerned that they were maybe too cheesy/ugly or not as efficient for starting tomatoes, etc. — I started to search and found your channel. So. . . to answer your question, "what method will I use"? Whatever the wife agrees to (after I share your videos with her)! Thanks!

  2. Hello, you are right to point out that it is not necessary to buy very expensive grow lights to grow seedlings or even plants. 5000k is a full and balanced spectrum, even if there is a little more blue than red (but that's not important).

Personally I would use small usb fans to circulate the air especially in the transparent box (beware of humidity). Don't put your lights too close to your seedlings, heat can be a problem, and seedlings don't need much light (about 250 PPFD), 18 hours of light seems to me too much, 12 to 14 hours is enough.

  3. Should those lights be frosted or clear? They sell them both and I’m not sure which to get. Please respond. Thank you I’m really thinking about trying your 5 tier set up.

  4. Thanks for this video. Considering buying grow lights for indoor sowing this winter and this gave me options. Can I set up a grow light or grow box in my garage? Wall is closest to the house. Thanks Callie!

  5. This was sooo helpful. I'm determined to save more money and growing more in my garden this year by planting seeds rather than buying plants from nurseries. The specific grow lights on the market with all the different colors are overwhelming.. makes it so much easier knowing we can buy other light bulbs which meet the lumins and kelvin specs! I'm going to start with the clamp lights on my countertop first and go from there. Thanks for your videos!

  6. Excellent video! I gave up long ago trying to grow in sunny windows .. that never works; invested in a multiple shelf/LED grow light system and my starts this system have blasted up to heaven. I've also employed several heated seed mats. All my starts look awesome! Also helped that I too, have a nice piano in the room by some of my shelves!

  7. I am using some LED panels that I can clip hang anywhere. Only problem, I’m not putting holes in my ceilings so I hung them in my extra bedroom closet. And supposedly these all stages of life LEDS are supposed to be pretty good. We’ll see.

  8. for the shelf light setup: could you actually grow mini peppers and fruit bearing and never take outside or is this set up just for starting seeds? Txs

  9. Great information and with materials that I can actually link to and/or find. Thank you so much. This is the the most recent video that I've found with info about making a growlight box.
I'd like to find a longer, narrower container and put two lights in it like Gary Pilarchik has his set up, but I have no idea where to get container like that (29×10-1/4 inches, 16 inches deep).
Why is this growlight box not line inside with aluminum foil like in the older videos?
Do you think two lights would work better in your growlight box?
I looked at the two foot shop light. It looks as if they don't make them with replaceable lights. Would rather start with economical growlight box.

  10. Great video!! The LED bulb you recommend is no longer available nor is the 2foot light. Can you recommend another one please??

  11. As a very much beginner gardener, I think the clip light or grow box will be a great way to start! I miss my Summer home grown tomatoes too much to wait for next year….any thoughts on where to get little starter plants at this time of year? ( I grow grape tomatoes!!)

I apologize if I missed it, how many inches do you keep the grow light from the soil for seeds, and how many for seedlings once they come up?

  13. Hi @CaliKim29 🙂 I'm so happy to have found your You Tube Channel! I am also in SoCal and I've watched several of your videos over the last few days. They've all been very informative and helpful. After watching this video, I put together a similar set up like your tiered shelf and will be trying out grow lights for the first time. My seedlings are always really leggy, so wish me luck! Mainly, I wanted to say thank you for all the work you've done to build this channel and be an accessible gardening resource. I look forward to your guidance and recommendations as I grow my groceries 🙂 Thank you!
