VIDEO: The MOST important thing about growing a garden. | VLOG

Soil health can be quite simple. I’m ready to jump off into this journey of learning soil, are you?

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. OH JESS !!!! You have made my day with this video !!. I do completely No-Dig gardening but unfortunately Brisbane Australia has just had the most massive flood- we are ok as quite high, but my raised beds just soured due to all the rain & I am rejuvenating the beds. Everything in this video made sense Thank You.
I think this is an important video for everyone gardening. Cheers Denise- Australia

  2. While you were talking to Will about bringing some of those minerals to the surface without actually tilling he mentioned some plants have a deep taproot and do that. Jason over at Cog Hill Farm planted a ' mixture ' cover crop in his future pasture/garden beds. In that mixture of those planted was a deep rooting radish ( He called them daikons- also edible ) which also break up the soil-does double duty. He said he will turn over that crop back into the soil as one means of amending the soil. As Will was explaining that means the minerals in those tap root plants will now be usable in your topsoil for growing.

  3. Thank you so much for this video. This is aligning perfectly with my gardening journey as I'm trying to improve the soil in my garden as well as convert some of our land into a small pasture. I can't wait to hear more from you as you share what you learn about composting and soil health. ♡

  4. Love what you said about adding as many different things as possible. I just got a load of very broken down horse manure and shavings (bedding) to add to my garden. I was asked why, since I have plenty of goat manure and alfalfa waste compost. I want as many different sources of life and nutrients as possible. If you eat only bread, or only broccoli, you won't be healthy. The healthiest diet includes as wide a variety of ingredients as possible. So does the healthiest soil.

  5. I always thought I had to till my soil when I added my fertilizer. I use a mixture of cow manure and mushroom compost and I thought it had to be mixed up in the soil. Have I been damaging my soil all these years? I've only been gardening maybe the last 10 years. Really getting into it the last couple of years sunset for watching you.
