Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I love your plans for your garden around the greenhouse. The greenhouse just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to see all the gardens you'll set-up along the driveway to the house and the barn. The swales made from the woodchips sounds like an excellent idea. I'm so glad you have help from Will for the garden and his idea for the woodchip swales is brilliant! I think it is Spring! Have a great trip this weekend. Thanks for this Jess.

  2. I totally agree on the raised beds! I'm not much for in-ground plots. There is just something about neatly spaced raised beds in a nice enclosed area that becomes a little piece of heaven. I have my dream garden all planned out in my head, with a nice pergola in the middle with dangly lights for night time cocktails. Of course, that may just work in my imagination, as the real thing will be full of spiders and mosquitoes. LOL

  3. You could still have your circular flagstone design with your walkway going through it and your benches on each side and the fountain in the middle. If you do some googling of flagstone patios a lot of times they are in circular designs with a walkway. Then you can start making your flower beds behind the benches and around the circle flagstone.

  4. Our local large commercial greenhouse has an annual PARTIALLY FILLED plug tray sale. They are between 10 and 50 percent full.

I guess it's not commercially viable to complete the process if the trays are not full.

We get great deals and are not a business.

Folks may want to check this out if they have commercial greenhouses around.

They make money on potential wastage and we save money on plants…fiscal symbiosis!

  5. I agree with Miah, it’s fake Spring until it stops freezing.

Does anyone know what kind of temporary greenhouse she’s using? I need one for my small garden.

  6. I sure hope you can share the plans for the raised bed garden you talked about. Your description of it is exactly what I would like to have. Something that reflects beauty and isn't just about production of food. Thanks for your inspiration.

  7. I'd do raised beds all the way. Your back will thank you for it in later years. I love your fountain. I could see some concrete walking paths going around it with stepping stones custom made by all of your family, with crushed stone filling in the blank areas, with alot of clay potted flowers and antique iron gardens things. Love the fence idea and the benches to sit on. Tell Miah he's a champ! Love the greenhouse, it's beautiful! God bless!

  8. I'm so excited that its getting warmer! I have to take a breath and step back a tinsy bit. my last frost date isn't until the start of May. I know I can start some seeds right now and I do have some spinach trying to grow. I just reset up all my trellises (I didn't like how they were last year and im hoping that the reconfiguration will be 100% better.) but we will see.

I wish everyone good luck on this upcoming growing season!
