Good morning from Maryland
I started peas and lettuce
I saw on another garden site about using sandbags as grow bags and placing them in a tote that you can fill with water. The sandbags let water leach into them and keeps the plants watered. Would this be a good method for celery?
Hi from Jericho, Vermont!
Any ideas on how to get mint to germinate?
Nelchina Alaska, Still a bit of snow going on. Still around zero over night. I started onions last month, use my old seeds, not getting a lot of starts. Will be buy more today to try a second round of onions. Also have a tray of lettuces and spinach started, had a few cantaloupe pop up so I guess I'll keep a few of these. Next week will start doing my cold stratification, will try the 4 day method. With over 30 inches of snow it will be another month before I can start tomato's but I will be starting Peppers next week as well. Otherwise April 15th will be my starting date for most other seed starts.
Can coneflowers be winter sown
Hello from Ontario Canada
Remember you are talking to many novice gardeners. When you say, "Top-off your pumpkin or melon vines" they may not know what you mean. Better to say, "Pinch off the fuzzy tips of the vine to stop it from growing any longer". Just saying…
I have never been able to get lavender to grow from seed. I tried your freezer cold strat method this year and I finally have lavender seedlings popping up. Thanks for the info!!
Happy Spring from OHIO!!
I haven't planted anything yet, but putting in my lettuce, spinach, fFordhook lima beans, Lincoln sweet peas, mustards, turnips and onions.
Is it too late to try to grow sweet potatoes? How to start potatoe slips?
Started around 50 tomatoes and over 100 zinnias and marigolds and everything is looking good!
I made a soil sifter from an old kitty litter sifter, added 14" hardware cloth. Used it to sift worm bin but also works starter soil. ..
Onions will grow year round if you let them grow to maturity. Herbs are also the same way. Plant your cold plants (direct sown ) BEFORE the last frost.
For seasonal information – Don't forget to check with your local University… Some have great Master Gardeners who answer questions, and many have a website. There's also classes offered, and the botanic garden usually has information as well… All good for your local zone.
Re: pumpkins not fruiting- it could also be a lack of pollination- possibly not enough insects to cross pollinate. Not sure if you can self pollinate?
Rochester, MN as well..
should I just go put ALL my seeds I bought from MIgardener in my freezer ????? I live in Upper Michigan and we have snow and ice right now and the electric went out last night
Has anyone ever had problems with mushroom compost from Home Depot killing your plants?

For fungus gnats I tried watering with a BT solution this year and it worked like a charm. I still had sticky traps for the adult stage ones but the solution took them out at the larvea stage.
I am waiting for the live for today to pop up, will there be one? …… Hope I don't miss it. I already finished my chores!!
