Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

G'day Everyone, sorry about the audio in this video I had lawn mowers and blow vacs on all 3 sides during filming. It felt like a stitch-up! I later found out my on-person mic failed… So, I had to do a LOT of work in post-editing to get the audio half decent. Anyway, thanks for your ongoing support regardless! Cheers 🙂
Mark, I am growing in my raised bed for the first time and I was practical about what I wanted to grow. Wish me luck. Can I compost things like onions and dried grasses? I don't want weeds or plants growing in my compost.
Thanks for the encouragement. I didn't even notice the lawn mowers. Your mic works well to filter out the background sounds.
There's a pest species of ladybugs in Australia??? I'm in Florida and we love them here because of the way they control aphids. What would the specimen you killed in the video do to the garden if it doesn't eat aphids?
We turn those dense pumpkins into slaw – they are excellent for shredding . I even can the slaw with onions and peppers .
People wanting to become more self sufficiant is just gonna raise the taxes for the rest of us, until there is no one left to work, then we're going back to the middle ages. Again.
Your tip 2 is spot on. The amount of people who walk around the office begging you to take one of their homegrown marrows off them is unreal. If you don’t want to eat it, don’t grow it!
in our climate in Canada lady bugs are beneficial.
Another problem with growing things that are farmed in the area is that there may be a lot of pests and diseases specific to those plants.
Thanks for your video trying
My own tomatoes & veg again
Might get something to eat this
Summer failed last year lol xx
Thanks. Always good information. I learn something new every time I watch these videos.
I can’t believe you killed a ladybug. I thought they were good for aphids.
Wait, Mark keeps bees now?
I've learnt so much from you over the past 18 months through the pandemic. I recently planted a veggie patch from seed and I haven't bought any veggies for nearly 6 months. Thank you!
Good to see the water has gone down there Mark. Hope this next lot of rain goes ok for everyone. My family is in Lismore area so more flooding happening there now unfortunately. Stay safe, great video cheers.
there is nothing about you i dont love, you are excellent!!!!!!!
“Jesus played fullback for Jerusalem.” I have never heard that phrase and it gave me a good laugh. Thanks.
G'day (Howdy, from Texas). Love your channel. I'm in US growing zone 9b, and I'm subtropical too. Glad to find and subscribe to your videos!
Well done! Ive got my first Birdies raised beds on the way here in the US from Epic Gardening! In my area its tomatos, but am concerned with sprays they use large scale, so grow my own so I know what goes into it.
Love, Love, Love ya Brother. solid with good advice!
almost there. 9.8k after 1 day
Why kill the ladybug? I thought they got rid of aphids?
Perfect timing, just had 4.5 cubic yards of planting soil delivered today and filing up some new raised beds! Can't wait to start expanding my veggie garden.
I hope the floods havent affected you badly Mark. I'm in Perth so all is fine here, but I've seen the rain fall on the BOM website and it certainly seems biblical.
Its reassuring to hear you also still have failures each year. I am both excited for my growing season, but also scared and hesitant about it due to my past, current, and future prospect failures. Some days its paralyzing.
