Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I am making more soil, I direct compost, scraps to my yard. I am converting more yard to garden. I do have plans to also make a compost tea/spray, so thank you for this!

  2. Home crafted organic fertilizer. Great idea and will save $$$, build your farm's production, teach others by example. Will help you grow tremendous food for your family and your animals. Healthy living environment, too! Fabulous work.

  3. If you can't do a full system of this or have the space or even if your not sure about this try chop and drop… I literally chopped up all my plants at the end of the season and pushed them into the soil, let them sit there over winter and my Lord almost all that plant material is gone and have big beautiful worms and the best soil I've ever seen. Just start from somewhere people your not gonna hurt anything. I love this channel and am slowly getting the knowledge to start compost this year but it all started with simply chop and drop

  4. Check out comfrey tea for liquid fertilizer. Comfrey grows like crazy has deep roots is cold hardy and you take the large leaves put them in a trashcan, a bucket or some thing and add water to them. You let it cook for a little while and then pour it on your plants for a great fertilizer.

  5. Thank You so much for a lesson in composting, My soil is only good for native wild plants and crabgrass. I was even advise to container garden, I do, I love it, but I would like to be able to do plants and trees that need to be in ground fruits and nuts, herbs and veggies. love your channel.

  6. I am so glad that you are starting to compost more. I have been composting for a few years now and have seen a huge improvement in my soil. I am ready for your garden tours this year, I am sure they will be epic!

  7. Love seeing the kids helping out .
I've been using a black compost bin this past year. I don't really regulate it to well mostly use it for kitchen scraps and yard clippings. I forget to add soil to it to help it cook

  8. This is a really helpful video, thank you Jess. I recently watched another youtuber in Scotland making bokashi compost piles which seem to break down very fast. I'm tempted to trial your way and the bokashi way and see what happens! Link to the bokashi video if you're interested: https://youtu.be/CR5W21TnkRI

  9. Why can't you use dog and cat poo in your compost? The reason I ask is I was told about their bacteria, and possible worms etc. I know what my animals eat and their medical things. They get no hormone injections, not on antibiotics, or any ad$ed stuff other than regular vaccines. I know what they eat. They eat high quality food. Where as people think the manure they use is safer. But fail to realize the cows and horses, are usually injected with xtra hormones and antibiotics. That goes into outta compost then garden then into the food we grow then ultimately in our bodies. We don't know what the farmers fed to the cows, horses, goats ,chickens and rabbits and they are farm animals so they eat things that the farmer doesn't feed hem.
So I don't understand why you can use farm animals poo but not cat or dog

  10. What you are doing is such a big project. You are learning and teaching at the same time. This will really improve how you learn and with your following it will help so many people to learn and hopefully make a huge impact on the world as a whole. When we can take the trash and use it to grow food and improve life for everyone instead of just filling up a landfill and polluting the soil, ground water and the air is amazing. More people need to think about what they are doing and how they can change what they do to improve their lives and the world as a whole.
For me this is a worm composting bin in my kitchen and chickens that eat scraps also. I am using this to grow my garden and feeding my family. I have also started using old clothes to make into rugs.
The big thing for me is trying to get away from plastic. That is harder than you can imagine but I know I have cut down my single use plastics by 25% so far.
