Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. While I'm waiting for Tom and Barbara's book – four and a half decades, still no sign – on the strength of your review and some knowledge of Liz and her channel, I'll have me a copy.

I've no doubt that it'll be confirmed as a 'no-brainer' as soon as I have my hands on it.

Seeing that monstera in your garden made me LOL, but then I'm in England.

    Oh well.

I can still enjoy your channel.

  2. Mark, I have been watching your channel for about a year. Hubs and I decided to garden again and have planted trees – cherry, pecan, peach, pear, etc. We are going to see what all we can grow besides tomatoes! Love watching your channel. We agree with your ad hoc gardens, except for the vegetable garden.

  3. Jeff Lowenfels "Teaming with Microbes" "Teaming with Fungi" and "Teaming with nutrients". Read them in that order, the last one is a doozy to comprehend. You will be able to grow anything, anywhere, with some applied technology or take advantage of what your local climate supports.

  4. Nature survives by over-satiating predators and anti-fragility, we can do the same. Over plant, and don't shy away from hard work and harsh environments. It will keep you strong, healthy and of course, very well fed.

  5. Regimented… yeah – I visited my daughter's mother-in-law's place and it's in an estate… I get it, 1 garden service for the entire place, keep it all low-maintenance for the residents… but it was FAR too sterile for me. I know my place is a bit of a shambles, especially as I've asked my garden service to dump all their leaves and grass clippings in my beds (free mulch for me), so yeah – my garden's a mess by contrast, but I LOVE how it changes from season to season, month-to-month, even week by week. I enjoy looking at well-manicured English gardens, but I don't think it'd be much fun for me.

  6. I totally get this. I love a not too structured space in the garden. Mixing up different plants, edible or not. It shifts the eyes and vision, giving a more natural look.

  7. great vid as always Mark, I'm always left feeling inspired and informed after watching your channel – I try to apply some of your advice to my own home situation but it's not always successful due to the amount of space available for planting, I'll try to find a copy of Liz's book as it sounds quite inspirational . thanks

  8. Love love love your show… I have learned so much…. but I just saw the scare on your right arm… Im so sorry… Im sure you have told us before but I didn't see it… so… what happened you poor thing
