Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Thank so much for the heads up on the Green stock been wanting one for a while but thought they were a little pricey. But I decided to splurge on myself for Mother's day and I got it before Mother's day. My Daughter and Son-in-law gave me dirt to fill it. I'm Really excited to get it going. Hoping to find strawberry starts to fill it. Will probably fill it with other things for now. Getting older now so upright is better for me and my dirt is sand. Yay!

  2. Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos and advice. Last year I planted my first garden and it didn't do too well. The only thing we harvested was tomatoes. This year, our garden is doing 10000x better because of all of the tips and tricks I've gotten from you. <3

  3. Thanks, Jess. This was like chatting with a friend over what we're planting out. Some of the same, and some different, but the anticipation is great fun.

  4. How much do you concern your planting with "cross pollination",
I believe that is what it would be called when 2 different types of plants planted too close together and as these two plants blossom and mature they turn into itself/or the neighboring plant so they ripen to be a combination of its neighbor that should have been planted a further distance away. So as in the mature plant they are the wrong color, wrong taste, wrong shape, etc.
I certainly could have missed you talking about it, but when I was raised as a child I remember the end result being wrong and didn't know how people would know how to prevent that problem. I've not read a seed packet in many years but back when I was a child I don't remember reading on the seed packet "don't plant these particular seeds too close or near to. ? (fill in the blank) to ? (fill in the blank) as your plants will not turn into what you are trying to grow."
Do you automatically know this information? Is it trial and error?
And in the High Tunnels is it a bigger problem of this development going bad and being really wrong.
I do hope I explained this so someone will know what I'm talking about. And if it is in another one of the videos can someone point me in that video direction.??
Thank you for all the knowledge you show in your videos. God Bless.

  5. I love it! I just sowed my Kajaris on the arch trellis my husband put up for me over the weekend. I wasn't sure if I could, but I also threw in some borage seeds on the outer corners! Hopefully will attract butterflies to my melons! I'm in Texas in zone 8 and our frost date is November 10th. I was encouraged that you are just now planting your melons. Happy gardening!

  6. My bane is the earwigs. They eat almost any cucurbit seed that germinates. I have the lizards that help control, but they are everywhere, and at best I can use DE, since I don’t want to poison the lizards and other predators.

  7. Honestly, cucamelons took me about a week or less to germinate. I've strated them in March so they are pretty big and probably would prefer to be transplanted into their big container.

  8. I love your garden!
I was 9 years old when I planted my first green beans. My parents didn't think they would grow, but they not only grew, but they great cooked and raw. First time for raw green beans, too. Yum!

  9. It's amazing how much you have accomplished since moving in. And now you can garden. You will be in your glory all summer. You have blessed. Can't wait to see how the summer gardening goes. Thanks for all your sharing.
