Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. In 2020, my mom finally got rid of her Y2K stores. She asked me if I wanted them, which was a big "NO". My aunt was stocking my mom's pantry and purchased things my mom would never eat. That was fear purchasing. Plus, none of the food was prepared for long term storage. Don't be like my aunt and fear purchase. It is a waste of food. Jess explains it well.

  2. It’s not intense. Like you said not long ago it was normal to store and prepare particularly for was out of season. It’s still common practice in many homes with gardens or who have been brought up like that to continue to some degree..

  3. THANK YOU for doing this and saying this. It sad sometimes to hear someone shame someone for being proactive and fulfill there own personal need of security.

  4. I miss your old videos about how to grow, simply how to preserve the harvest, no extra commentary necessary.
I love your fascination with light and rainbows…. Same here!
And pressure canning scares the HECK out of me lol!

  5. The first time I watched you, I lived in a city. And I said, "I want to have a garden like that." Now over 50% of my food comes from my garden on almost 7 acres. You changed my life. I had never successfully grown a vegetable and now I make bread from giant zucchini and can green beans.

  6. I've discovered that i am a cooking from scratch cook. I thought i cooked like everyone else. Chopping veggies and making my own sauces and soups. Nope. I didn't know this. Old times mentality i suppose. Hoorah for a farm kid upbringing.

  7. Have enough on hand so when you hear " hi I'm from the government and I'm here to help" you can say "no thank you we are fine". God bless.

  8. We get food grade buckets from Walmart bakery to keep food in. My husband fell ill and was out of work for a year. Because of our back up food and supplies we made it through without much difficulty:)

  9. I was JUST wondering if I could purchase in bulk things like canned tomatoes and put them into smaller jars. Why…. Well my garden was just under almost 2 foot of snow. I covered what I had impatiently planted already and it seems alright and I kept it covered as the temperatures are pretty cool at night again. I know better but…. So glad they were still covered because today it hailed for a good 30 minutes and so now there's a nice layer of ice out there. It gave me the idea that I might have to find another way and here you are dropping that checkered flag. Thank you Dear Heart for all your wise and sweet words. You're a Blessing to us all.

  10. We are just doing what our grandparents did. They had pantries with canned foods and never considered it prepping…that was normal
Rainbow are sign of God's Covenant wit man! Of course they give us joy ☺️

  11. Some years ago we sat down with our neighbors who were like family and took inventory of what we each had. I had more food already stored, a larger garden than them, etc. They had lamps and oil, tools and extra storage space, etc. So we worked together to build an ongoing storage of needed items that we used regularly. When someone supposedly cut the power line that fed all of Southern California we saw how desperate people could become very quickly. When I finally made it home through the craziness, I walked over to see them. They gave me lamp oil, and I gave them batteries for their radio. We each had plenty of food and water, and gas stoves that didn't need electricity. We got to visit with all the neighbors who came out for walks since their TVs didn't work, and it was an interesting time, but we never were afraid we would go without. I would encourage folks to build community, and work a plan into their daily lives so at any given time they are not caught off guard, even if the emergency only lasts a day or two.

  12. I was just telling my adult daughter that I am trying to learn to eat in season. Even though everything is ever available, if some day it isn't, and I have taught myself to eat seasonally, I feel like it would not be such a fearful shock to my system. And putting up food storage isn't anything new for us, we have been doing this for several years now, and each year I add more things as well as new skills. It is all credit to you and a few other others like you. I have learned so much, and opened my eyes to the faults of the commercial food system. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart my sweet friend ❤️

  13. Thank you for your honesty. It's perfect. Thank you for being brave enough to make this video and also encouraging others to put aside food. I'm sick of watching people on vacation, knowing they don't have even 3 months of food set aside let alone a year. Their mentality of just going to the store cuz they've got a lotta money…. isn't going to be around. Thank you! Thank you! Keep on going girl!

  14. I absolutely love your videos. My husband and I moved into our very first home with our son and daughter about a year and a half ago. We are planting our very first garden this season (on a super tight budget) I am so excited to finally get started planting! Our dream is to one day have our own homestead and I am so excited to start learning how to grow my own food where we are now. Ive had my kids out in the garden almost every day with me now, and I believe they are almost as excited as I am. I truly appreciate all of the wisdom you share, all of the tips and tricks, and all of the mistakes, I cant wait to make some of my own. Thank you so much for continuing to share your journey. I cannot wait to one day be where you are in an established homestead, you’ve given me so much inspiration. Thank you.

  15. So much! I respond to the heart felt urgency also -I feel like God is saying “listen to me” and it gives me peace in my spirit having some some good stores so that I can care for my family and my neighbors. Just like my garden-when I felt the urgency to expand my garden I did and then Covid happened and I was peaceful. Thanks for being honest
