Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

Concerning drainage holes: if you live in a hot area or a residential area with trees nearby, put the holes on the sides of the pool instead of the bottom, about an inch up from the bottom. This will keep a little bit of water in the bottom for hot dry days and will also prevent tree roots from growing into the holes and sucking out all the nutrients.
I love growing my own foods and have been for years.
I got two apple boxes first and last year two more last summer" they were free " I knew that the compost was going to be free, town and city give it away free , but potting soil and garden soil is going cost , and it costed me lots, I paid 10$ and today it more
Good idea. This year I saved my dog and cat food bags. Rolled down the sides a bit, threw in some potting mix and wala! It’s working great so far.
Can I mulch with grass from the mower bag?
I planted Cherokee Wax Beans in a kiddie pool just a bit larger the last couple years!! Great Harvest every year!!!
Great vid Jess!
I've been doing this for years. It works so good
great idea for my kids to learn..
After seeing your first video on this, I planted a small kiddie pool I'd had for my ducks the year before. A friend saw it and brought me four more larger used ones which I've also planted. They are next to the +/- acre garden.
Saw a lady on youtube make her garden in those totes you can get at walmart
Love these instructional videos!!
Your greenhouse looks beautiful! I'd probably spent most of my day out there!
The very first episode I ever watched was the kiddy pool garden one. I did my pool garden as a herb garden. I had a great time putting together mine. Thank you for the great idea.
Anyone ever use water from your water changes from the fish tank as a garden fertilizer? I've used it for flowers but have a hard time with the idea of put it in my edible gardens….
I live on an old mint farm and they have not farmed mint here for onward of twenty years, and every year Mint pops up in the most random spots. This year it is actually growing in more spots than the last few years.
You just amazing teacher Jess! God bless you abundantly.. I'm from different country indonesia.. and I still find ur tips useful.. keep going what you doing.. much love and support from me
? I'm looking for the videos on how you made your garden beds. Can't seem to find it. Thanks for all the sharing you do!
You have inspired me! I'm going to try to grow indoors. I never thought of a kiddy pool. Thank you for the motivation!
Oh Jess I have just had the best week-end in my garden for such a long time. I got to rejuvenate with my own compost & my plants were honestly smiling when I finished. The work I put in was so rewarding & I am now sitting having a cold beer looking over my garden from our deck. What a great informative video for all. Cheers Denise- Australia
Thanks Jess! What a great video. I live in an apartment, but there's some space out back where I have tried to grow a few things but they got crowded out by a jungle of saplings, tall shrubs, and whatever else comes up where the lawn meets the woods. I never thought of using a kiddie pool. Now I know what to do, and it's a whole lot cheaper than any raised bed kit being sold at the big hardware stores or even the discount stores. I will be heading to Walmart this week for a couple of kiddie pools and giving this a try!
Can leftover coffee be used for other plants as well?
A semi cheap thing you can sprinkle on the dirt surface for nutrients is fishfood flakes. They have no additives, fairly cost efficient and break down when watered.
