Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Girl i feel your pain. This is my 1st year trying to have a garden…i started from seed and still dont have my raised bed built…so saying that my plants are getting huge and trying to fruit in the containers i planted up in from the 6 cell seed starter trays.

  2. Does Ben not like gardening as much as he used to? He used to get SO excited to help you plant. It always tickled me to watch him get so excited.

  3. Earlier in the season I bought about 20 wire trash baskets from the dollar tree to protect my starts from birds. The trash baskets worked great. Now that my plants are bigger, I don't need them for that and stack them up in my garden. My cherry tomatoes and green beans are producing, and I just grab one out of the stack of baskets for harvesting. Then in the house I can make a new stack of the used ones, until I get around to taking it back to the garden. Before, I would always have to run back to the house for something to collect the veggies. My gate situation isn't ideal on my garden, so I try to avoid going in and out as much as I can. My chickens love going after my slicing tomatoes whenever my back is turned, and they are sneaky little girls!

  4. when counseling patients on when to take their medications I will always say that the ideal time/way to do it is bla-bla-bla but you and I live in the real world so you can do la-la-la and it will still work. Same idea

  5. Im going to check and see if I can get organic ginger at my local Kroger. If so i want to try this experiment as well! Thanks for the info and as always the inspiration!

  6. The ground pork and ginger remind me of Thai lettuce wraps..it was served with julienned cucumbers and a couple other green vegetables that I can not remember and lettuce leaves that I shredded. I then mixed the whole thing together and ate it over a bowl of rice, by far one of the best Asian dishes I have ever eaten….Amazing!!

  7. You just might be pleasantly surprised. Some of the best, most productive gardens I’ve ever had were overhead watered from sprinklers. Good luck, you’re doing great!

  8. I love ginger. I've always wondered how to grow my own. Thank you. Do you ever pickle it? If so, do you have a recipe for it? Also, I noticed that at some sushi restaurants they either have a pink ginger or a white ginger. What did you plant?

  9. One of my favorite quilting gurus, Jenny Doan @ Missouri Star Quilt Co. frequently tells us that finished is better than perfect. I definitely follow that phrase in quilting and I notice that I carry it through to my gardening as well. Whatever it takes to get plants to harvest, even if it involves breaking the garden police rules.
