Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. WOW! Looking at all the work y’all have done over the past 2(?) years just blows my mind. Congratulations to the both of you as well as family & friends – AMAZING. And it looks so good too!!!

  2. Love the 2 pergola ideas, one for sitting and swinging, and one for coffee and devotions at a table setting, same pergola, different options….I love variety too, Jess. It's gonna be beautiful. Can hardly wait to see them finished.

  3. You might include a little work area on each side too. Stash some gardening supplies there, similar to UK allotment areas. Just would help you function more efficiently. Love these aerial shots, Miah. Love the farm.

  4. The over head shots look FANTASTIC! So neat to see the beds and more from the air. I love the idea of the pergolas….and then having the greenhouse as your central point!

  5. I will be in S Carolina (from Oregon; still in the 50-60's and rainy) in early July ….. I would so love to visit your beautiful farm, see your animals and gardens. I've been gardening for many, many years but have gleened off your knowledge to improve my garden. And this summer we will be first time chicken owners.

  6. Haven’t heard you sing in a minute…Seems to me, you have a lot of new things to sing about.
Just wanted to help you remember not to forget about that. Listening to “Only God Knows Why” here in California and you came to mind…Only God Knows Why?

  7. Definitely agree with twin pergolas flanking the greenhouse to break up the Potager garden, and give folks a place to stop and ponder. I'm with Jeremiah on the swing, a full size crawl into with a book swing, and maybe take a nap. I have a small wood doll high chair next to mine for a place to set my coffee. And a (small) collection of chairs around a table in the other for coffee with a friend or two, or vlogging, or planning. You might think of staining the wood on the pergolas to a dark green to tie them in with the greenhouse, but not compete. Or plant your grapes and scuppernongs to cover them. Being smaller they will help lead the eye to the lovely greenhouse. You could also put a short rock wall or split rail fence in sections around them to define their space and give roses a place to climb.

  8. I feel so blessed right now!! I got a new wheelbarrow this year… she’s real cute lol!! I have been slowly adding stickers and praying on having some of y’all’s on her!! Thanks so much for helping out the community and making this opportunity more available to us right now. Y’all are amazing keep being you and may God keep blessing y’all in such a special way ❤

  9. Oregon here, we have had most of 7 inches of rain since Friday (this is Wednesday June 15th) the sun was out today but I was still wearing 3 layers while I was working.. I am at 1500 ft elevation. But Portland is drowning to. I have only gone out in a tank top 2 times this year. I want sunshine, But I still don't want your heat. Don't want to go straight from early spring (in june) to blazing sun. Sigh

  10. Place looks wonderful!! It looks great from the air but I can't help but think a nice winding walk from the high tunnels to the green house would be wonderful. It could stop at a swing in the middle of the potato patch . Then on the other side you could mirror it with a path to the table and chairs where you have underground wiring put in so you can power lights or computers or whatever. The path would eventually end at the house. I like the idea of being able to stroll through the gardens and getting close and personal with the garden rather than walking down the road. The road is so hard it makes it feel like you are going to another job rather than enjoying the beauty you have created! Just my humble opinion. Regardless of what you do, Great job thus far guys!

  11. I would put ''vine-huts'' as sitting-shade features. A pergola structure with a rather slim profile, planting a grape-vine or something like a wisteria at each post. They will grow up, provide shade in summer, but loose their leaves in winter so that the garden can have sun.
That's what my grandparents had, and it was perfect
