VIDEO: My most FAVORITE Garden Job (Plucking Potatoes) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Nice potato harvest. I didn't think you are suppose to dry potatoes in the light. They will turn green, especially the white or yellow ones. I dried mine in the barn year before last and even tho they were in the dark mostly some turned green from just a small amount of light. Now I dry in storage building with the windows blacked out.

  2. My great joy today was having a cookout with my childhood friend, Robin and our new neighbors Alicia and Bill. Alicia and I have bonded over our gardens. Alicia and I in our separate gardens are growing an incredible variety of vegetables. We are also helping each other troubleshoot gardening issues. Happy July 4th.

  3. Oh I loved seeing you pull up all the potatoes, what an awesome harvest. If I get a break in the heat I’m going to grow them the way suggest, a friend gave me hay last year and I’m looking forward to doing the way you just did ! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Happy 4th ❤️

  4. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."-John 14:6
"But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."-Matthew 10:33
“For the wages of sin is death (hell), but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”-Romans 6:23
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand – Matthew 4:17

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God – John 3:5

  5. Digging potatoes getting paid was not an option not wanting to dig them was also not an option. They were grown to feed us. We did not have a lot of money. In stead teach what it is like to have no food. We could not afford to hire people to do our work.

  6. Lovely harvest. Jess, why do you can potatoes? I'm from Aotearoa New Zealand and we just store our potatoes in bags (hessian etc) and keep them in a cool place where they last a long time. I"m sure you do this too, but I"ve never heard of bottling (canning) potatoes and wonder why you would?

  7. I grew potatoes for the first time last year and we (my husband, myself, and our 3 young kids) had a blast digging them up! We also said it was like digging for treasure! I planted about triple what I did last year mainly because of how much fun we had.

  8. Just had to pause your video and say I loved how you were talking to your son about the bugs. You are such a great and patient mom. !!! I love watching and learning from your family.

  9. So I have a silly question. What temperature do you think your greenhouse is at? My husband suggested that we do that with ours but I was afraid it would be too hot.

  10. Hi Jess. It would be awesome for the Wise Traditions Podcast to do a episode with you as a guest. Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, is the host and producer of the popular ancestral health podcast called Wise Traditions.

  11. Wow your space is REALLY coming together nicely! I love planting potatoes each year, just to find the treasures too-it is a fun job! This is a great way to plant potatoes- you continue to teach us so much Jess, THANK YOU!

  12. I put a bale of straw in my compost, but now I'm worried what it could do if contaminated. Before it goes into my veggie garden next spring, I'm going to do like you suggested a couple weeks ago, and try to grow some green beans in it first. Maybe in a pot in the house early.
