You can put a fourth of a cup of Vinegar in your water to clean the kale.
You were the inspiration for my garden this year. It’s tiny, and a lot of failed crop, but I learned a lot this year to apply next year. Thank you for mentioning your faith in your ability to have a garden next year, instead of preserving for many many years ❤️
Rhubarb dumplings are amazing, and I love strawberry Rhubarb jam. I grown herbs in my kitchen window.
Hi Becky I don’t know if you will ever see this comment but we are not fans of kale raw either. But I found a great way to prepare it. Put it in a bowl cut to the size you will eat it. Then sprinkle a little salt over top. Then massage it, squish it and mix it for a minimum of 10 mins. Makes a world of difference
I learn something new every time!
My grow zone is 9b Salinas ca. I grow year round but not in such a large volume. ❤️
Rub raw kale with salt and the leaves will bruise and reduce in size considerably. Rinse the salt off and have delicious tender leaves.
I took some of my garlic and pealed them , then put them in vinegar for 3 days then drained them an put them in a jar filled with olive oil and it is so convenient having them ready to use when I need some. I store it in my fridge and it has been in there for over 6 months and still looks the same as when I put it in, and it is nice to use the olive oil in my cooking. Next year I might try slicing them into thin slices and see if I like it better.
I like putting kale in when I cook quinoa in veggie broth. So good.
When I dehydrate herbs like oregano, rosemary etc, I save the stems to use in bone broth. Rosemary stems are quite tough and I've used them to make a local favorite Spiedies using the stems as the skewers. Soaking them in water overnight. Then I skewer the marinaded meat and then grill. Wonderful in the middle of winter, to grill these and make the neighbors jealous. I remember one time back in elementary school a girl turned to me in line and said my coat "smelled like summer." My dad had grilled the night before. It was about 3 degrees F. She said "It makes me feel warm." So grill when it is winter it might make you feel warm. This was in the 1970s when you used charcoal grills. My parents took us on picnic to grill lunch in the middle of winter at our local state park. Usually, one of the provilians had a roaring wood fire we would visit on our walk and the marshmallows would come out. And sometimes s'mores were made.
Have you tried massaging your kale salad? I believe you're meant to put the dressing on and then massage it in with your hands which makes the kale better to eat
I did a bit of research on making a kale salad and what worked for me was to chop it small so it is a nice size to eat then massage it with a bit of salt until it softens up. Then add all of those yummy things you have in the restaurant salad. Give it a try. the thing that you will appreciate about a kale salad is that it lasts in the fridge for several days. Do be careful to not add too much salt like I did the first time. I made it for lunch when a friend came over and it was a big hit, even for my not big kale fans.
Make rhubarb pie. Add strawberry with it and the rhubarb and strawberry pie. Both are out of this world.
I wanted to see the bugs you got out of your cauliflower… did i miss it?
I live in the PNW (zone 8b) and ALL of my radishes have been a bust this year. Not grown in containers. It just may be one of those years within the insect cycles that we are destined to lose.
And thank you for the raspberry tea leaf suggestion! My raspberries are crazy happy this year, so they could donate a few leaves to their caretaker. 😀
If you had a root vegetable in that bed last year. Or the dirt had a root vegetable planted in it. That will cause it the Flys lay their eggs and the next year they eat the roots
I see that you have an electric stove, wondering if you pressure can on it??
I process my rhubarb in a steam juicer. Then I freeze the juice to either make rhubarb jelly or by adding a sweet pop like 7up to make a drink that tastes like summer in the winter. I also pickle my garlic scapes. Pickled garlic cloves are a big (and expensive) treat so the garlic scapes are cheaper at the farmers market and when pickled taste as good as pickled garlic cloves.
slugs love radish. I caught them in the act.
Thanks for the kick in the pants. I’ll do herbs tomorrow. I’ve basil, mint, & oregano. I’ll do a second planting of dill. The thyme is huge and over winters beautifully. Looking forward to more posts.
I made the apple cinnamon Oatmeal bake and its yummy but it's it supposed to be mushy? I guess I expected that it would have been more of a bar. Not mushy. Did I do something wrong?
Such a wealth of information. Thank you for always stretching and increasing your knowledge, and sharing it with us.
Love love love dried herbs. I harvest them, wash them up… towel dry them, then just spread them out on my counter top on kitchen towels… and in about 24hrs they are dried up. Make "raita" an Indian accompaniment to our spicy dishes… peeled, shredded cucumber, diced tomatoes, yogurt, salt, pepper & dried mint w a dash of milk to make a smooth consistency… my favorite yogurt dish. Give it a try… could be a great salad dressing or even added as a dipping sauce for grilled veggies & grilled meat.
