  2. You're right. Gardeners today treat bolting as a shocking annoyance. But centuries ago they would let a few plants bolt intentionally so it would produce seeds for next year's crop. In theory you can buy seeds once and then eat for free for the rest of your life if you allow a few plants to bolt and collect seeds. That's smart gardening.

  3. One of the nice things about gardening is that you can watch your plants go from just little seedlings to tall and great sources for vitamins/nutrients.

  4. You know, my neighbor offered his grass clippings to me for compost and he got a bit upset when I turned him down. I had to explain that they were full of dog turds and that wasn't good for compost. He asked me why that was and I was caught at a loss. I knew why once upon a time, but my memory is starting to go. I thought maybe you could make one of your short videos on the subject and I could get him to watch it. That way he could see from an authority that I wasn't just snubbing him. (Parenthetically, I used to get dog sh!t in my compost all the time and never noticed any problems. I really am just winding up my neighbor.)

  5. Just found your channel by accident…but i think not an accident!…I love gardening and learing about plants…this wasa great episode for i really had no idea it was called bolting! i would love to pick your brain on how to get, un firtile sandy soil, in a very hot to mod climate, to be ready to grow veggies…we just bought some land in mexico by todos santos but not where it in anything like an oasis..lol…mostly sad and rocks…and the bags of what they call earth was mostly chips…some of them mostly do the trenching method with the earth covered with bags to keep the moisture …any advice would be welcomed…looking forward to therest of your videos..thank you….Tracey

  6. My mom always called it going to seed. She was a seed saver. I let one of my radish plants go to seed. It got tall and produced lots of pods. I wasn't sure what to do with it, I was going to wait until the end of the season to see what happens. Would the pods turn brown? I didn't know. But, when I went to the garden on Friday, that plant was gone. Half the onions that had come back from last year were also gone. The ones that weren't taken had their tops taken.

I was disappointed to see what happened. But, there are things still growing. I hope that our growing season is long enough for my tomatoes to produce fruit. I noticed on Friday that one of my cucumber plants has a tiny cucumber on it, about 3/4" long. The peppers that I raised from seed have many flowers. I hope I get some fresh bell peppers. I like tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers on toast with my home fermented sauerkraut.
