It Is Finally Time To Harvest Your Garlic. After 9 months or more of building (and bulbing!) up, the wait is over at last and Garlic harvest time is upon us! As a low-maintenance crop, the journey hasn’t taken a lot of effort, but we have played our part.
At planting, we ensured the proper time of year, depth, spacing, as well as soil type and of course lots of mulch. As spring rolled in, we were on deck again with fertilizing, watering, weeding, and for hardneck varieties, scape removal.
In this video, I’ll recap all of that good stuff, but the main focus here is the harvest. We’ll go over when to harvest, what to look for, how to dig up the bulbs, as well as drying, curing, and storing the heads of Garlic for long term storage.
It’s a biggie and we cover a lot. But Garlic is an important crop for many of us, so its best to get it right. The video does focus mostly on hardneck Garlic harvesting, but the same rules apply for softneck varieties as well, other than the scape removal. Garlic is Garlic after all. Enjoy!

I enjoy your garden l, thank you for explaining things in steps. My garden thanks you too. When starting a garden of any kind there are so many do's and dont's, but you keep it simple so everyone can understand! BIG FAN
Just started doing bit growing my own little bits started with strawberry in a pot and herbs in pots, going to try garlic as eat loads. Thank you for your knowledge.
Another excellent informative video. You answered all the questions I had without me asking them
So next up… A video on how to eat those scapes!
after I dug up the garlic, can I put it back in the soil for bigger growth ?
Great information.you didn’t say what strain of hardneck you grow. I’m a garlic grower with a homestead in Vermont. I grow German white and I have a smaller Japanese variety I replant every year. I shoot for 3” bulbs on the German white.2-1/2 is the smallest usually. I give them azomite for minerals, greensand and a little blood meal in the soil at planting.cold winters here and I never lose them
Thank you for this video!
When do I put garlic in freezer? How to deal with the frozen garlic when you want to use it and after freezing can you use those cloves to plant again? Thanks for appropriately timed video!
I live in fl. So we don't get very long freezing Temps. Would we need to put them in the freezer?
I havent had good experience with garlic, either the bulbs dont sprout in the spring or they dry out very quickly due to the heat, I will try using the fertilizer mix next spring and see if that helps.
Perfect video! I just harvested my scapes yesterday, and the bulbs will be another week or two. I shake my head when I see people buying the junk Chinese crap in the stores. 85% of the water in China is so polluted that’s it’s not fit to use for anything!
great video!
Wow garlic
I've just harvested 30 garlic plants, FANTASTIC VIDEO
Would garlic grow well if planted separately as due to space in garden? Planted them in plastic plant bags….
Thanks for the great video. Curious as to what varieties you chose to grow in zone 9b?
My DUDE!
So happy to have found your channel. First crop of garlic this year, just single season but will do the fall planting next.
Keep rocking the Roughies colours!!!
We learnt so much this year about growing garlic with tomatoes. I will also plant later than Nov as in London we haven't had snow, like we have been having mild winters for years now. I might also freeze the bulbs for 6 weeks or so before planting.
I just harvested my garlic today, over 100 heads. They're all hanging in bunches from the rafters in my shop, and OMG it REALLY smells garlicky out there, lol.
