VIDEO: How To Grow Onions | SEED TO HARVEST

GROW ONIONS IN CONTAINERS | START TO FINISH
GROWING TIPS:
*Growing onions from seed is easy, and allows you to choose the exact varieties you want to grow
*keep the soil damp but not soggy, and provide at least 5-7 hours of direct sunlight per day for good germination.
*Onions are generally considered a ‘cool season crop’ because onion seedlings like to start their life when conditions are still cool. Then as the weather warms up, they switch to focus their energy on bulb formation. Therefore, monsoon season and winter early days is the best time to plant onions in most places.
*Onions grow most happily in moderately rich, well-draining soil. For that we will use a mix of 50% garden soil 30% compost and 20% river sand
*Onions are mature and ready to harvest once the main stalk gets weak, thin, and starts to flop over. The greens will also start to turn yellow or brown, especially at the tips

In addition to size and color, different onion varieties are further classified as either short-day, long-day, or day-neutral onions. They’re grouped by the number of daylight hours required to trigger good bulb formation.

Short-day onion varieties will form bulbs once daylight hours increase to 10 to 12 hours per day.
Long-day onions will form bulbs once they’re provided 14 hours of daylight or more.
Day-neutral or “intermediate day” onion varieties form bulbs with 12 to 14 hours of daylight.

You can plant onions almost any time of year (especially if growing for green onions), but your timing will impact the size of onions you harvest and when they are harvested. Onions will get the signal to form bulbs when the day length in your area is getting the correct number of daylight hours for the variety. In general, this is around:

10-12 daylight hours for short-day onions (for Southern latitudes)
12-14 daylight hours for intermediate-day varieties (in the middle)
14-16 daylight hours for long-day varieties (for Northern latitudes)

  1. Great video! I love these videos and I have been using your videos as references and tutorials to grow my own plants! Thank you for yet another great video. I am also growing onions from seeds, and I will try again using this tutorial. Thank you for the video and have a great day!

  2. Onions needs a wide area to grow sir, these containers may be good for some other vegetables like pumpkin, pepper tomatoes etc but if you use containers for onions u can grow very less quantity which may be use only under a week in home

  3. Is fertilizer necessary? I really don't want to use it and grow it all from nature. If there is something to prevent adding fertilizer and still getting the best harvest possible?

  4. You have THE best gardening videos by far. I live in Long Island so I don’t have a ton of land… very helpful! What is your suggestion for what seeds to use? I have found what seeds I had definitely impact my harvest – which you had suggested to be in the broccoli video last year!
