VIDEO: How To Grow Potatoes Indoors – Part 3 of 3

Growing Potatoes Indoors? Can it be done? Yes, it most certainly can. Should we though? Well, that’s what we aim to find out today in Part 3, the final video in our series of How To Grow Potatoes Indoors.

This is a 3-part video series where we take regular grocery store potatoes, wash and chit them to cause sprouting, and then plant them indoors. We also touch on the soil we’re going to use, the meaning of “hilling your potatoes” and why we do it, the lighting requirements, as well, even a scale model of the Potato planter box that we’ll be building for the video in Part 2! Today is the culmination of all that effort as we attempt to harvest what we’ve grown. Follow along and grow your own indoor Potatoes with us…or not. 🙂

  2. Great experiment! I grow potatoes in 5 gallon buckets so I’m not tying up garden space. A question I have is on the hilling: is it even necessary?

The varieties I tend to grow — Yukon Gold, White Superior, and Red Nordland — are determinate potatoes. They grow all their potatoes right at the base where the seed potato was planted. Kennebecs are determinate too. It’s the indeterminate varieties — russets and a few other types — that require hilling. You might be better off just planting the potato deep and moving on.

In my buckets, I put in 1-2” of soil, plant the potato plant, and then cover with soil to the top of the bucket. The plants eventually push through the top.

Because I plant my potatoes around March or April they tend to be finished by June or July. They never get that cool weather soil cooling. Also, I don’t give my potatoes much nitrogen after an initial dose of blood meal. Instead I give them bone meal and then use Morbloom 0-10-10 liquid feedings.

With this, I tend to get a few good large potatoes and then bunches of medium and small ones. Perhaps in addition to the aphids, there’s too much nitrogen?

I’m now going to try this experiment on my own this winter using a single bucket and see how it goes. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. I’m growing strawberries from seed indoors as well as other plants indoors and out but do I need to put strawberries on a certain light cycle to get them to flower? They are still small plants now and I do have a light timer.

  4. Please try sweet potatoes indoors. Thank you for sharing your results and this video. I've been wondering what could be grown indoors under lights and if it would be worth it. Especially here in the maritime northwest USA. 🙂

  5. Just take 5 gallon buckets and put about 3 inches of compost and soil inches bottom. Place seed potato on top then cover with leaf litter gathered from forest floor. Amend the soil with a good balanced fertilizer when planting and you got a cheap way to mass produce taters. You can buy cheap led grow light bars to provide a lot of light pretty cheaply. Using mirrors around the plants help to maximize light efficiency also. An attic is a great place for indoor winter gardening.

  6. Jeff, after all the videos you’ve made for gardeners(me included), I would not be surprised if you figure out how to grow ready to make French fries. I’ll be watching and waiting. You da man!

  7. I found out last year that you can hurry the potatoes along, and not affect storage. I cut the plants off while they were still green, gave the potatoes a week and half sitting in the ground afterwards, and even the smallest that I harvested made it until spring no problem.

  8. I'd like to see you do indoor lettuce. I've been brining mine inside during the hot days to prevent bolting, but otherwise, they've been outside in containers. Brining them into the air conditioning in the house has worked so far, but I only have a couple of pots of Romaine. My iceberg lettuce bolted after just two days of early hot weather even though it cooled down right after those two days.

  9. Turmeric is a tuber crop like potatoes and a little more expensive at 15 dollars a pound. Not to mention the possibility of American ginseng. You should try this experiment again with a different type of more expensive tuber.

  10. This was actually the first time somebody explained the reasons for small potatoes even if all the conditions otherwise are right. I seem to have lots of potatoes, but most are small despite watering, etc. I live in SoCal and have planted the potatoes in the spring, which comes early here (March) and potatoes should be finished in July/August. However, it is hot here till September. So I will be planting later to plan for harvest in October or later. Thank you for that!

  11. This series was great. I am going to try indoor red Moreland in a pot this winter in my grow room. I use sterile soil and coco coir, and the room is interior, not a garage linked to the outdoors which should reduce my chances of pests. The lights are on anyway for the citrus trees, tomatoes, and cucumbers (adding greenhouse cups this year), so my lighting costs are already there. I figure I can get two small harvests, which I am timing for the hungry gap. So……can you grow some medium sized parsnips in a pot indoors (and bring outside to get the cold treatment prior to winter harvest)? I love parsnips but have trouble timing it out here in tropical Chicago summers.

  12. I watch a lot of vids on youtube, and yours are by far the biggest bang for my buck on excellent information presented in a way i can absorb with out my ADHD taking over! thank you for the effort you put into your channel!

  13. I have a dwarf cherry tomato plant growing inside. It's been stagnating now for about 2 weeks. It has a few flowers and a couple of green tomatoes but it's doing nothing, no growing, and no new tomatoes. I would love to see a video on tips and tricks for indoor tomatoes. Thank you!
