Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. My pleasure Mark. Of the two trees I gave you one was a seedling and the other was a sucker or runner. Your fruit has grown a lot bigger than the ones I have here but similar to the ones still growing at the farm. Mine had more fruit and less pith. They are amazingly tough as the cows do get to graze on them despite the fencing we have added. I'm now retired and made some marmalade myself (OK with Lynn telling me what to do) which was not too bad for a first attempt. (Needed to add Fowlers Jamsetta to get it to set). One citron really perfumes our house when I have picked one. A friend described the taste of the marmalade as "It tastes like it smells." Apparently monks used to use it to perfume their robes. They are related to Budda's Hands fruit apparently.

  2. If you're interested in making marmalade there's a sour orange called "Seville". Only the smooth skinned variety seems to be regularly available in Australia, though after searching some forums (daleys) I managed to source some seeds that are claimed to be from the rough skinned variety. They seedlings are still too small to produce fruit, so it will be an interesting to see what happens over the next few years. Might be one to keep an eye out for yourself.

  3. Maybe combine the citron flowers with other citrus that flower at the same time and a brand new Selfsuficentius species may be the result! Love the videos.

  4. Hey Mark! Interesting Citron, but.. the roo! Do they just hop around wild around those parts? Do they steal fruit from your trees? I'd hate to have to fight them for an orange!

  5. It's been a while since I last saw one of your videos.. I realised I have missed them. Anyways, we have a small lime tree here in Dubai.. It lost all of it leaves, probably because of stress. How do we make it thrive and bear fruits again. It is good soil in a pot, and we water it every day. Should I just give it more time and see if it comes back with flowers?

  6. Hey Mark.
Love your videos and they are awesome advice for Aussies here.
Do you know of any other Aussies veggie gardeners to watch and follow?
Also can you please do a run down on an Australian product called Swift Grow.
I'd love to hear any replies from you.
