Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. My tomato year is terrible. No tomatoes yet because I planted them too late. Now I have vines with no tomatoes because they’re dropping all the blossoms and not producing fruit

  2. My grandfather had a 250-head Jersey dairy farm in Central Florida 1915-1957. They are the best tempered cows and produce the sweetest milk. I love that you are expanding your little herd.

  3. That butterfly bush will get about 15 ft. tall. It might be a little too close to your house. I think we all need a little bit of therapy. Something that makes you feel happy is the best therapy for the soul. I live .in Portland, OR. It has been hotter here than usual. The tomatoes are sweet and good this year. Jerseys are my favorite breed but watchout for milk fever. When my cow Ginger came fresh she was giving 5 galllons of milk a day and it was very very rich.

  4. My tomato’s did amazing this year. I’ve pulled them up now since they slowed down significantly and I’ve planted my fall green beans. But I still have some cherry tomatoes producing in five gallon buckets

  5. Both of those girls are very flashy and pretty, and yes having a "pocket cow" when it comes time to teach them to milk will make it so much easier. You done good girl. God bless

  6. Jess I know you will be interested in this tomato if you get a chance to read the comment because I know how good you like dark or black tomatoes… You need to try the Gary o Sena tomato because it's a black tomato that almost every tomato is between one and two pounds… It is a stabilized hybrid between Cherokee purple and pink brandywine, it has the production and darkness of Cherokee purple with the size and uniformity of Brandywine, absolutely amazing… But when I look at those 1.5 lb. Black tomatoes with the taste of black and the texture of brandywine I know these tomatoes are actually worth more than any tomato I've ever grown per pound… I been growing tomatoes for 4 decades up here in Tennessee mountains and Gary o Sena ranks number 1# …. I know you would be interested in that tomato if you seen the comment.. Great show as always…

  7. You never have to many southern peas here in middle alabama we love pinkeye purple hull and ladyfinger peas we love them green with orka cooked on them, honestly I love shelling the peas green so relaxing and a good excuse to sit lol

  8. Jess! I felt I was channelling your energy the yesterday.

I'd gone out to check on things (we're having a heat wave here in UK which I've definitely not been prepared for – most things are suffering)

Anyway, my tomatoes are definitely not suffering! I had to gather up the bottom of my t-shirt to get them back to the house!

  9. Jess you do realize there are levels to Cowculas, not just one and done . They are beautiful animals looking forward to more of them in future videos.
Ginger in high tunnel grew really well for Jill, in your old tunnel.
