VIDEO: Sun Exposure Levels Explained – Garden Quickie Episode 90

What Is Full Sun? Part Shade? What’s the difference between Part Sun and Part Shade? Burning questions that we gardeners need to know!

Light levels for plants are a crucial parameter in the success of the crop. Without access to adequate light, plants will suffer and so will your harvests. On the flip side, too much sun or too intense more likely, can be just as bad for other crops. In today’s Garden Quickie, we sort all of that out and more!

It feels just like yesterday I started this series. Garden Quickies are hyper-focused 2 minute videos that tackle the most pressing growing questions of the day. I’ve compiled an entire playlist of them here, check it out!: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiie7K8ZgA_I1trKU0lbcCqf4NK2f3nhf

  1. I lost so many plants this year because I didn't understand that full dun doesn't always mean full sun. So, many plants developed leathery, weird colored leaves, or they just wilted and fell over. Shade cloth is my new best friend! I wish seed packets were more particular in their instructions! Thanks for the video!

  3. I planted a macadamia out front, then realised the house shades it from 2pm. I'm going to have to move it and put something else there but I'm having a devil of a time trying to find which sun requirements fit my space. Is there a category for no afternoon sun?

  4. This right here it will help many gardeners especially beginners . I wish I knew this many yrs ago then I probably wouldn't have had burned plants . You're teaching is so good for those that don't know and want to learn .

  5. Another great helpful garden quickie! My backyard garden gets around 9-10 hours of sunlight in summer, so investing in row covers or shade cloth can help save your plants in the "high noon" blast. Tons of mulch will also help keep the plants from stressing as it helps keep them cooler along with protecting against water loss.

  6. Well Jeff, I found that out with the Alaska Peas I planted this year. One trellis of peas worked out great. Four feet away the other trellis of peas dried up into seeds for next year. By near the end of June I was collecting pea seeds. Our summers aren't usually hot enough for that. So I didn't think anything of it. We have had a lot of unexpected mid to high 80 degree F weather. Unreal! The Peas were for U.S. Zone 3, we are in 4a. Normally it wouldn't have been an issue. But, I do have seeds for next year lol! Enjoyed, take care!
