One way to easily and quickly clean out your beds of spent plants is a no-till, no-disturb method of simply cutting the plants down and removing their top parts. Its fast, effective, and very low maintenance on our part.

I never till because many veggies reseed. I get 4 varies of tomatoes every year. Also, spinach twice a year.
Great information! I often get regrowth from stumps of cabbage, Swiss chard, and other plants. Sometimes productive, sometimes not, but still fun.
I had powdery mildew on squash so should I throw out soil and start over?
I've been working on developing these practices in my garden. Leaving aside what an old dog like me would consider the 'supposed' benefits, it's less work by an order of magnitude.
Does cutting at the root collar apply for peas and beans too?
Can you "no till" containers?
Wish I had known this 7hours ago…. Only just sat eating dinner and catching up on here….
Took a load of lettuce out today and beans and did it the wrong way….. But I must admit when I pull them it's very gentle and 95% + soil stays in the ground and roots too.
Will know for tomorrow clearing.
Secateurs or pruners you should not put them in the wood like that because of hygiene and blunting them

Always pulled the whole plant out.
Tomatoes were a godsend this year – and still producing!!
But the cold is closing in, especially night time and early mornings.
I am a no till gardener and have been for years. People used to think I was crazy before it became the thing to do. The one thing I have always had problems with though is this..by cutting off at the root collar that root only has one season to compost. And in most instances it does not. How do you help prepare your bed so it does? Planting the following season would be so much easier without these things in the way.
Will very just cutting tomato plants off at soil level when I cut mine, usually around xmas eve in 9b Sacramento. Thanks.
