When my grandma raised (or had) chickens–she never paid any attention to raising chicks. The hens did that. Whatever happened, happened. But there were many chicks wandering in her yard, anyway.

back up is an absolutely necessary, when a hen goes broody. just found my hen in the weeds with 14 eggs! moved her in the coop, and even though she was trying she couldn't cover all of them. so we moved half the clutch in the incubator. bless you for sharing.
