Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

So I get a perioral dermatitis every year on my face and I have medicine that I'm supposed to apply to it and I've also been prescribed antibiotics however I will not take them because I don't want to disrupt my gut microbiome that much. So literally I will apply the cream to my face and have no problem with that and my face will start to look better and start to look better and be almost 100% cleared up and then I'll get invited out or want to go on a date with my husband and I'll put makeup on my face and immediately it flares up because I will not wait long enough for it to 100% clear up. #impatience
All 7 of our Pyrenees do the exact same thing as Gabe. I think its just a response to something moving and once they know its you they know its no longer a threat. My husband makes it a challenge to see how long it takes them to realize its just him lol
And making memories. Enjoy! They grow up too fast!
Hi Jess! Do you think the oil you rub on your hands before you milk was causing the recent flare ups? So glad you share your life and stories with us…Much love from Texas! 🙂 <3
How funny… "we are NEVER out of milk" LOL – I love that pattern and how cool that I have watched that video several times to make something for my sister. <3
Toast reminds me of kitten George.

Skin issues can be so hard to narrow down. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It's possible to develop an allergy to something that was never a problem before. I wonder if you've become sensitive to cows milk, after using mostly goats milk for so long . Or have you been using something new, while milking, maybe a new cleaner, or udder cream, that you didn't use before.
Assuming you don't break out when you make butter and cheese, it seems more likely to be from a product that is being used around the cows. You can test each item by putting a little on your inner wrist, but not exposing yourself to any other cow stuff that day. If all is good, skip a day and test another. If you haven't already tried this, try to think back to about when this started. And test anything that you might have started using for the cows around that time…and maybe other animals as well
Could your olive oil that you put on the utters have gone rancid and you are having a reaction to that?
Love love love those granny squares, so adorable! ♥️❤♥️
My word Ben is so sweet!!! ♥️
When you were talking about being out of milk, I half expected you to say "we're never out of milk. We are in the milk!" My son Morgan used to ask if we were "in" something if we had previously been out of it. He was a clever little three-year-old.
Not sure if you can keep your cows from eating it (if indeed they do), but grow some lemon balm around the milking area: Flies HATE lemon balm.
You can test milk with rubber gloves, and then you would know for sure.
You are doing well trying to be well.
I don't know if it applies to cows. For many animals when their winter coats come they develop dark patches in areas that need the most warmth. The theory is that the darker the coat and the larger the dark patches indicates colder or worse winters.
Sweet Jessica, it could just be the vigorous stimulation and rubbing, touching, the course hair, the udder, that would ordinarily initiate a small itchy response. However, when you have an auto-immune condition going on, the responses are always so overblown, and way beyond anything that the body would ordinarily do. All the histamine molecules get together and have such a tremendously red, hot, and miserably itchy party on or under our skin!
Such a heart video-Ben is such a cutiepatutie- love his gentle nature with the animals and being momma’s helper.
I agree calicos are almost always female.
Thank you for sharing a great video
Female kitties are generally better hunters than males. Enjoy a snugly rainy day at home!
