If you are an avid gardener, you know how much effort and time it takes to grow plants and yield a good harvest. However, despite all the hard work, you may end up with a less than satisfactory yield. It can be disheartening to put in so much effort only to get disappointing results. Fortunately, in this article, we’ll be providing you with five epic tips to help you maximize your harvest.
Tip 1: Overwintering Solanaceous Crops
Peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes belong to the solanaceous family of crops. Regardless of the climate you live in, this tip can significantly improve your harvest, particularly for eggplant and peppers. It’s almost like a cheat code for gardening. This technique involves overwintering these crops. You come in with your pruners and cut down two-thirds of the plant near the growing tips. Essentially, you’re removing the foliage because the plant will become dormant as the temperature drops. If you live in a cold climate, you can dig up the plant, pot it up, put it in a warm, protected area, water it maybe once a month during the winter, and bury it back out in the garden in the spring. However, if you live in a warm climate, you can leave the plant in the ground until next year.
Tip 2: Using Liquid Fertilizers
Liquid fertilizers can help you maximize your harvest. There are plenty of good brands available, or you could make your own compost teas or manure teas. Liquid fertilizers are particularly useful for fast-growing plants like salad crops. They can absorb the fertilizer much faster than granulized or powdered type fertilizers that are placed on the surface. This can give you quick results and help buff up your crops.
Tip 3: Understanding Your Growing Space and Light
To get the biggest and best possible harvest from your garden, you need to understand the context of your growing space and how your garden plays with light. For instance, some plants require less sunlight than others. If you have a shaded area, planting a fruiting plant like a tomato there may not yield any fruit. Therefore, it’s essential to know where the most light is and how to train and prune your plants to get what you want.
Tip 4: Planting in the Right Soil
It’s essential to plant your crops in the right soil. It’s not just about having healthy soil, but also the right soil for the plant you want to grow. Plants need specific nutrients to grow, so it’s essential to research what soil is best for your crop. For example, plants like blueberries require acidic soil to thrive.
Tip 5: Proper Planting Technique
Lastly, planting technique plays a vital role in maximizing your harvest. One of the most important things is to ensure that the roots are well covered with soil. When planting seedlings, you want to bury them deep enough that only the top leaves are visible. This allows the plant to establish a more extensive root system, leading to a better yield.
In conclusion, these five epic tips can help you maximize your harvest and make your gardening experience more rewarding. By overwintering solanaceous crops, using liquid fertilizers, understanding your growing space and light, planting in the right soil, and using proper planting technique, you’ll be on your way to a bountiful harvest in no time.

I'm glad to see Epic expanding. Lots of love for Mark. But I have to continue to thumbs down vids with Chris. I understand why she was added to video content, but I don't think her strength with Epic is in video format.
