I do this exact thing, but I often put newspaper at the bottom over the holes and put a layer of river rock over that… and then the dirt. Not sure why I use the rocks…. but the news papers keeps the water from eroding the soil as quickly.
Beginner here…when you are talking about the perlite, why is the enriched with miracle grow one a bad thing?
Oh no, I just grew veggies for an entire season using this perlite. I should have read that very fine print. Is all of my container soil bad forever or would it wash away? What would you all do with this soil?
James, thanks for all the items in the description, do you have videos specifically explaining how to use each product?
Alugbati
Excellent vid! TY. I grow on my deck and place my pots and grow bags with water hog plants like toms, cucs 'n squash in cat litter boxes so they get wet to the roots & can self wick, this also allows the drained water with nutrients to wick back up. (Dollar Tree and they are in their 3rd year with no wear or cracking). Easy to control the amount of rain water, if needed just tilt to empty. I've been doing this 3 yrs now very successfully.
My herbs and other plants are on 1" tall school lunch trays, more shallow and also working very well (Restaurant Supply).
What’s up James. Robert here from San Francisco. Newbie with a brown thumb ready to dive into gardening with a goal to start a salsa garden. Not a lot of room. Thinking about starting with a small bucket garden before graduating to a raised bed. Stumbled to your page and inspired. Thanks
Would it be ok to sit the pots directly on the concrete?
I don't know what Lowes you go too but there are NO FOOD GRADE 5 gal buckets at Home Depot or LOWES! They are so much more expensive than you portray.
I tried all summer to do container gardening on my patio. I didn't do very well, but I learned a lot. I'm going to start over as soon as springtime arrives.
I wish i can grow plants in containers. Cause i have a very small space
Old 5 gallon buckets. Punch holes in bottom. Will it work. ?
Can you put rocks in bottom of bucket
If you dont have any compost. Can you use. Dried. Leaves
That's the way you do it get them hands dirty. True farmer.
I could watch your gardening all day
Have you ever grown sweet corn in these containers? I am thinking of giving that a go this Summer.
I was not ready for the level of energy coming out the gate lol
this is nice, but am in Nigeria i believe our soil texture are different. How do i go about it
How do you make mushroom compost James?
So much good info in this one. Thanks, James!
Did you use compost only mix with perlite and peat moss nothing more?.
I went to Lowe's last week for perlite and they only had perlite with fertilizer in it . Is there a place that I can order just regular perlite on line ? I don't drive far from home
Great advice thank you . I haven't any room here for in ground planting .
How many gallons of water would you need for each container??
hmmm, your "patio" looks a lot like a big back yard….
Thank you for your sharing. We are also a horticultural products supplier and manufacturer. I wonder if I have the opportunity to cooperate with you.
I like to cut large holes in the sides of the buckets and line them with weed fabric to hold the soil in. This prevents plants from becoming root-bound.
