The lower roots that corn grows when covered with soil greatly improves the ability of not being blown over in high winds and storms when the upper part is heavy with the forming ears. As a plant Corn basically has a shallow root sysytem. Yours will benifit from moisture below the soil level when you cover the brace roots below ground level. Some native Americans trenched their corn with great success since the surface soil dries out so quickly. Bernard
Now that is growing potatoes old SKOOL. They look very healthy I hope you get a good crop. Yours are much more advanced than mine. Are they earlies or a late season main crop?
It looks like things are going well there. Nice work.
Great and logical solutions with your plant growing, J! Finding out things by accident can be very beneficial sometimes. Gives us good experience.
Your compost looks very nice. How old is it? Do you have many piles you collect from?
I try to keep 3 compost bins going, filling one of them each year with new material, and keeping a three year cycle on the compost before using it. This mild winter the compost material seems to have broken down much faster, and the one from last year is already finish to use.
Best wishes,
Halvor.
The orchard garden is looks great! Are you growing at three different locations?
Great solution to getting good roots on your corn. Everything looks very nice!…..ann
That looks fantastic J. Good system. Wish I had that space but like you said takes time to get around just got some rain 35c yesterday think a storm is comming
Great update!
Planting in trenches only works in areas were it doesn't rain really heavy. It may work or it may fail horribly just depending on one bad weather spell. The trenches become bowls of mud and things simply just rot out. Trenches are great for low rainfall areas or places that wont have 2"+ rain in one day.
The lowest i would plant is ground level anymore. That way the excess water can still drain off and not down the roots. What i like to do is make large rows and plant in a furrow (trench on the row). things like potatoes and corn as they grow i pull up even more dirt from in between the rows to hill everything up.
I find using some sort of mulch imperative to help with moisture evaporating out of the soil. This year i tried using hay as it pretty cheap and goes a long way. The soil under they hay stays moist much longer. It also shades the soil keeping it cool in the summer heat.
Thanks for sharing.

Oh I love your potatoes! : )
