I think I will to!
Love my raised beds
Good points, as usual! I would very much prefer raised beds, but we're not there yet. We garden in a 1000 sq ft patch of earth right now
I'm trying to expand pretty quickly here on our little farm, and can't quite afford the extra lumber and soil at the moment. Still need 1000' of deer fence, finish the orchard, build the chicken coop, and maybe a pole barn. Then I can devote the resources to the beds. But I'm very much looking forward to the day… But it's probably not as close I as want to admit….
I will never go back to straight ground! Great points.
Great ideas, I'm planting indoors at the moment.
Jeff, True about the raised beds we've been gardening this way for about 30 years. It was necessity at the time due to clay soil conditions. A bit of a tip for when you're growing the cabbage family plants or other plants such as swiss chard that a susceptible to pest damage.
We started using floating row covers last year and they work like a charm. It's a bit of extra expense and work but it pays off.
When I get out of the city I will want raised beds. I have the winter grow room that I can get next years plants started early to speed up the rotation of crops.

what climate are you? I have used raised beds in a mediterranean type climate, with snow and rain in the winter and now in sub=tropics. In neither case do you worry about ground freezing over winter. But, from what i have read even then the raised bed is the best.
