G'day Everyone, here's some info/knowledge about wedges I received that I thought was worth sharing here: Hi Mark, love your Youtube episodes and I'd just like to pay a little bit back and give some advice from an old man. I just watched your video on stump removal. ….. no, I'm not the fun police and gonna bang on about PPE …. What I'd like to say is next time you make wedges make them along the grain not across the grain because they'll be stronger and won't (shouldn't) snap. Also, wedges are more efficient with an angle between 10 and 15 degrees. if the gap is too wide, two wedges opposing each other will work or use a block to fill the gap and a wedge.

Great job. Tip: if you had cut your wedges along the grain of the board instead of cross grain the wedges would have been more robust and wouldn't break as easy. Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

Tch! Far easier to dig out round it and build a fire on top/around it. It may take a good few hours but far easier.
I USE a reciprocating saw with arbor cutting blades,BOSCH makes 12" hardened blades that are only 3-5 dollars ea ,which is alot cheaper than. a chainsaw blade!
And the dirt really doesnt effect these blades anyway!

This is not the way to go one bit! The best way to remove a stump is by leaving the tree up. Then you dig around the root and cut all the roots. After that you attach a chain the highest point on the tree you can and pull on the chain with a tractor if you happen to have one.
Wedges played 10% of the role. Chainsaw did the bulk. In inexperienced hands like mine the chain will need professionally sharpened as I am sure to cut the ground.

Removed my 14 year old peach tree stump, over 4 days, using a mattock, a shovel, a big heavy crowbar, with a chisel blade tip and an axe…..no chainsaw. The crowbar was definitely needed to pound and breakup the earth between the roots, where you can't swing the mattock.
I never understood the point of using this, even the iron ones. An axe can do the same job. When I chop fire wood and I need its function, I simply use the axe, then I bring out the big demolish hammer and bang the axe from the back side 🙂

In central Missouri, the ground breeds rocks, so digging around stumps to any depth greater than 6 inches is an hours long project.
