  1. My Grandmother & Great Grandmother used old tires stacked on top of each other along the back fence of their yard . They lived in town & had to paint the outside of them to keep city code enforcement off of their backs. Living in town & having a sm yard they were very resourceful. They had a compost pile that was yard clippings & leaves & they used that in the tire stack to grow their potatoes . I remember them doing this when I was in my early20s & that was over 40 yrs ago.

  2. Potatoes can be grown in sacks filled with dirt. With slits cut here and their then you push the potatoes in and they grow through the slits then when tops of plants die just turn sack upside down and empty….

  3. Put a foot of hay down in the fall. When ready to plant in the spring, pull aside just enough to plant, then cover whole bed with another layer of hay. Over the winter it will rot and feed the soil.

  4. You need more cover obviously. Not a whole lot, they did o.k., very nice crop, but there was more green there than there should be. You might want to put something more on top. That, is a result of light and chlorophyll. Potatoes on hills are especially prone to greening and toxic solanine poisoning for this reason.

  5. We’re doing that 50 years ago. First time mail ordered . Were wonderful! Gained 10 lbs that summer. After that we used grocery store potatoes. Worked fine. Do not know if that would still work. Grocery store potatoes don’t seem to sprout. What has been done to them?
