Real helpful advice on the root structure and dry and wet environments, I now can see that I've made some mistakes, our weather is the Philippines so do to heavy winds such as Typhoons I planted some of my calamansi, Pomelo, Lock-ban (grapefruit) trees incorrectly, ughh, so much work down the tubes.
Every reference I find says to not amend planting holes when planting fruit trees. The rationale is that tree roots will tend to stay in the amended soil and not move out into the un-amended soil. I also see that grass was left growing right up next to the tree, and some was put down into the planting hole alongside the tree. If any of that grass was perennial, it will certainly be competing with the tree. Lastly, no mention was made of mulching the tree for encouraging soil life.
