Excellent tip, Huw! Our soil currently has the consistency of concrete but hopefully that will change when it warms up.
Thanks Huw. This method is so much more obvious and cheaper than buying an expensive soil testing kit from the garden centre. Maybe you could follow this up at some time with ways to amend your soil ?

I have red clay that acts like its brick, working on improving that.
Great tip here, Huw! Super easy way to figure it out! I have clay soil, and have been working on it the past few years by adding leaf mulch as you mentioned. Plus the worms absolutely love the leaves, which helps break up the soil as well.
If loam itself is not good for drainage,is it good to partner with rice hull to achieve good drainage?
