man oh man there is a-lot that goes into homesteading!
It’s never a easy decision ! They have a job on all homesteads ! I have 2 roosters to 14 hens . It seems to be a good mix . My girls are doing great with them 🙂 now if the boys start fighting and are mean to my girls , they will go in a pot .
Patara, have you read " Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"? I think you'd enjoy it. There's a chapter called "you can't run away on harvest day : )
It is just the Circle of Life. Yes it can be a hard decision, but it has to happen. Have missed your videos. Have a blessed day.
So happy to hear about the sponsoring of children at Pine Ridge! I live in South Dakota and our area has been going there yearly on missions trips to help out where needed. Also, we were just discussing our rooster situation, also. Makes me sad but we need to do something immediately with our extra roosters.
Time for some chicken and dumplings!
Glad you made this video, Patara. We will probably have to make these same hard choices in the near future. We have 7 roos to 47 pullets.
Hey There Patera! Within the last year, we started our homestead in east TN. First 4 chickens that we got and were told were hens have turned out to be beautiful Welsummer roosters. Just talked a few days ago about the need to reduce our Roo numbers. Will be processing for the first time and by hand next week. Really want an intentional processing to remind us why we raise animals, that we do eat meat and to consciously inform how much meat we eat. Thanks for the pep talk.
Couldn't find a better person to provide me with some good meat !! I have watched how you care for your animals, if I ever had a question or how care for animals, you'd be the one.. You go above and beyond to care for your animals.. lucky person, who's getting your roosters.!!
I love that you have such tender feelings , it must be hard. Thank you for your Vlogs. I am just a non Homesteader but wish I had been one 🙂 too old now almost 80 years. You work hard I see that, Bless you all. Merry Christmas, Happy New year too !!!
You can never have too many _____ (fill in the blank). Take care.
Hi Patara! First time commenting. Love your videos. I always have a hard time culling chickens but then I remember how great a life they had compared to birds bought at large grocery stores. It's a sacrifice we meat-eaters make for the welfare of livestock.
When I raised rabbits the ones I knew would be food got numbers and the ones to stick around got names. Occasionally a number got a name when they showed hidden promise. I can only remember once or twice when a named got demoted to a number when they began showing attitude problems. They got cared for the same but the difference made it easier on my heart when it was time to prepare dinner. (Never breed mean back into your rabbits.)
Gone to freezer camp.
Yeah. North Carolina.
My dad got thirteen chicks. Two were hens. Ten roosters went to our neighbor. You have to make decisions based on what is best for your flock. We got more hens later on.
can u make a video showing the roosters u kept and the nice ones?
Great info that I will pass on to my daughter. She and her household bought 17 chicks and now she knows she has five roosters. A friend has taken one, but she can't seem to give anymore away. Yes she's willing to give them away. Now she'll have to make a different decision and enjoy their meat. I wonder if she will do it. If not for their family but friends or family members.
Hello from Texas Patara. This video is hard but I know it's necessary. We lost 22 chickens in the flood and my heart still aches. My consolation and yours can be that they had an amazing life and were loved. Hugs my friend from Houston.
My girls tell me that's life
Peaceful healthy ladies is always the goal. There are "gentlemen" roosters, they are the keepers. It's just my opinion, I appreciate your opinion and willingness to share. Blessings. 🙂
Sorry precious. I know how hard it is. You absolutely did the right thing. X O
Love you. Look forward to your videos.
It has to be done. Thank-you for sharing
I love your videos
I love how the goats nibble on your clothes. lol
