This is the second video in a 5 part series on seed saving for fruit and vegetable plants. In this episode (Ep2) I explain how I save the category I call “Wet Seeds” from our food garden to grow more organic plants next season. The next episode (Ep3) details saving “Fruit Tree Seed” and the previous episode (Ep1) https://youtu.be/bHY19SbtBYI was on saving Dry Seed so make sure you also see both these as all videos in this series are related. Happy gardening, cheers 🙂

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

This was great, I've been looking for "best copywriting advice" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about – Fonucas Ziyyatt Tip – (just google it ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cousin got excellent success with it.
'Let them ferment out, or not, whatever….' Lovely. Thank you for making saving seeds easy.
Khanacademy.org has a whole series on Genetics – it's Free.
You might benefit from it, also what You see might benefit Science in general.
In particular, your observations about the self-seeded tomatoes needs more data.
Every day we Miss things. I think you Cought something there.
Mark, you're one of my favorites, so PLEASE don't give your dog tomatoes! They are Nightshade members, not good for pups.
Papaya will seed very easily.
That was great! I never knew about seed fermentation before this – thank you so much, you're a gem!!
First I've heard about fermenting seeds! Does doing so affect the shelf-life of the seeds once they've dried?
I just started gardening and I had some extra cherry tomatoes. So I didnt know about fermenting. I just put the seeds from cherry tomatoes on a napkin for a week to dry then planted them. I didnt know if they would come up but they did!
UMMM the english subtitles isnt working…. Im deaf.. Loves your shows..
I had great luck taking tomato seeds with kitchen paper and leaving them for a week to dry before planting without fermenting them first. The mucus layer dissipated within 2 days. Though this time I'm letting them go for 10 days to see if I have a better germination rate.
Great video mate, love the channel.
Great video series! Even though our climate is a lot different than yours, I can still glean information for what applies to my garden. I also appreciate how you get right to the subject matter, thank you!
Question: Are bell peppers are considered wet seeds that need fermenting?
Your garden is really awesome, and I love your mannerisms and expertise. I feel like you’re Steve Irwin but with plants, and I mean that in the nicest way
Yes, dragon fruit grows slowly from seed….but it is so much fun! It actually germinates rather quickly, which is satisfying. And it makes a cute little cactus that you can keep on an indoor windowsill for a long time before it needs to be given more space.
I’ve been bing watching your videos for a few weeks now. I have three birdies raised beds on pre-order because of you, thank you! One thing here though, most plants are hermaphroditic, not bisexual. I know what you meant, and a lot of other people probably did too, but they are pretty different things. Plants aren’t bisexual. Bisexual = sexual attraction to 2 genders. Hermaphroditic = One plant has both sex organs (ex. Squash). Dioecious = 1 sex per plant, 2 plants needed (ex. Marijuana). Cheers!
The paper towel/cutting board thing is brilliant!
I was told that any seeds that float when cleaning them are bad and will not grow is this true I've been throwing those away
OMG, I would love to be your neighbor…such knowledge and a great personality.
If you leave seeds to self plant, how do you know they'll grow if you have to revive the soil?
I know what you are talking about with the heirloom seeds not being resistant to uglies. I WILL ferment from now on. Thank you so much!
Love, thank u
i’ve never seen a fuzz-less kiwi
'Jaws' in the background at 3:09 nearly gets your shoulder Mark!!
This was stupid effective. I grabbed one of the last good cherry tomatoes from my dying cherry tomato plant and squashed the seeds in a small bowl with water like you suggested. Let them ferment for 2 weeks and at the end of the two weeks when I was about to sieve through them and put them to dry out on a paper towel, I noticed like half of them had already cracked open and started pushing growth out of the seed. In the fermentation water bowl! I barely dried them out at all after sieving and decided to just plant them in a small pot. Now I've got I think 22 stems with first leaves in that pot. Simply pretty much 100% of that single cherry tomato's seeds sprouted. This method and tomato are so effective you don't even have to consider the possibility of success rate below perfect success. It's crazy!
For the love i can not get passion fruit seeds to germinate! I have tried SO MANY different ways from freezing the seeds to scoring them and they just dont germinate. I dropped them in water and they sink so i know they are good but they just refuse
wow the paper towel trick at the end is epic
Some plants can naturally deter pests! Maybe you should look into it for your tomatoes! (I hear cat nip is a good one to keep the pests away! 😀
