Turn food scraps into free compost with the help of worms! The average household throws out 2,000 pounds of food scraps per year, these can be broken down by worms and turned into free fertilizer for your garden.

I live in Arizona, isn’t it too hot here? You should set your friend up!
Will the compost not fallout through the drainage holes ?
We need a worm farm to feed are turtle
so the tubs stay in the basement? what if you wanted the tubs to stay outside? would you do the same to the tubs but not drill the lid, keep it solid?
My question is – will they survive the winter outside if the soil doesn't freeze solid? My zone is 8a (Seattle) and I don't have a basement.
Are you able to throw worms into a garden bed when you get too many worms?
How long before you harvest your castings and can you do this outside in a hot or cold environment?
I just got a few worms from a friend to give this a try, let's see how they do
Hi Luke, this may seem like a silly question… but what’s the difference between a worm bin and compost? I live in a small space and keep a compost outside in one of these plastic storage bins. I drilled holes in the bin and it just sits outside in my yard. Right now I have two bins going… one is “curing” so to speak, and the other is the active compost where I add my fruit/veg scraps and coffee grounds and brown paper bits as needed. These bins are teeming with worms! I never added worms to them, they just naturally come on their own. So is this a “compost” or a “worm bin”?
I am excited about worm composting! I’m worried about how I can keep my worms warm during the winter? Won’t the cold kill them?
What if there are worms all ready in your compost, can you still use it if they are different worms…or can I just use those worms instead of buying the recommended ones?
Thank you so much for this. I am going to buy worms soon and I'll make sure I use your link!
Starting to do this right now. Got the bin and cardboard and about to get worms. Just add veggies. Thank you!
Do they need to be kept. Warm and do they need a light.
Can I just throw my worm compost into my indoor plant soil? Or do I need to do anything to it?
Do you water these worms… If so how much a week?
I am confused why there's a concern about 'what will your wife think?!' lol! I'm female and I like worms. I'm thinking I will have to sell my husband on the idea…I used to have 'pet worms' in my babysitter's garden. We're not all afraid of or disgusted by creepy crawlies…Also my rats probably think we humans are gross, too! 😛
For collecting worm juice, incline the boxes by a half inch or so. The juice collects in the low end and is easily removed with a turkey baster. A lid may work as a bottom piece to collect juice, but it is not made for that purpose and may not be able to support the weight. A slightly bigger box or tub would better. Ridges on the bottom piece can cause the worm juice to collect in the middle and effectively prevent more water from exiting the box. A flat bottom piece is recommended. Raise the worm box off the bottom piece with scrap wood, either small pieces spread out or longer pieces running the length. This allows much better drainage. If the bottom piece is weak, use a piece of plywood to support it before inclining the box.
Most excellent video, great advice.
Could you make this in a smaller size. For example, something you could have in your kitchen?
I BUILT A HIGH RISE AND FOLLOWED ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS THE VIDEO GAVE ME. I SPENT 50.00, MY WHOLE BUDGET FOR GARDENING FOR THE YEAR ONLY TO HAVE THEM MASS EXODUS OVER NIGHT. TEN YEARS AGO. I AM GOING SIMPLE WITH A OLD ICE COOLER AND COMPOST THIS YEAR. MY QUESTION. WILL THEY BE HAPPY IF I KEEP THEM ABOVE FREEZING ONLY THIS WINTER?
I THINK THEY THINK IF IT LOOKS "PRETTY" OR EXPENSIVE IT MAKE WORMS MORE BETTER
I love your videos and totally appreciate your contributions. You have had a profound impact on my gardening, so thank you!
I was really hoping this video was going to explain how to retrieve the worm castings. Which is like the goal of composting with worms… Do you put the next round of food on the opposite end and wait for them to travel over there so you can dig up the castings?
Can I order these in the winter? Do they freeze?
I followed your 1st video on making a worm bin years ago And one bin grew into 4 large bins Over the last 3 and a 1/2 years And everything has been going great until about 6 months ago… I started getting mites In my bins and I've tried every Remedy I can find here on the Internet From drying them out And adding more bedding, To using DE, to attempting to bait them out using watermelon and cantaloupe rinds ( Which actually does work but it only takes a little bit at a time and I still have a bunch of red mites and And white mites) I even tried Making my own Organic Neem oil spray To spray in my bins to try to kill the mites And I really didn't notice any improvement. So my question is to you Do you or anyone else know a more effective way to rid my bins of these disgusting mites?
Brilliant video ! Thank you so very much as I can too start this project with my girls and help them to learn the cycle and process of the food that we too eat and how we can keep it continuously going on in ways that are beneficial. Also too help me find and add another way of keeping them from their ipads/phones as much as possible, which is always a grate thing in my opinion, thank you once again ! Superb video !
How often fo you add water to the bin?
May l know where to buy the worm ?
Should I wait until spring to start my worm bin? Mine will be outside in a shaded part of the yard. Thought it might be too cold to start in January?
