In this video, I explain and demonstrate how an “easy to assemble” raised garden bed might not be the best option.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Bodgy McDodgy has now entered my lexicon of gardening terms here in frozen Canada. Thanks Mate.
PS You are right about those star pickets. Lent over into the top of one of the taller ones. Buggered my eye lid and injured my eye. Hurt like hell. Could have been really nasty. I always cover them and thin bamboo cane stakes too.

  2. I've had my put together raised beds for over 4 years and they are still in good knick even in the hot queensland sun. I use the 2m x 1m x 0.4m ones. I can see why the taller ones might get compromised.

  3. I have been watching many of your videos..very informative. Thank you. What is your opinion on adding grass and chopped up leaves as compost to a garden? Thank you
    Dan

  4. I got the lower set version of this, the one that's only 1 panel high. The plastic posts on those have been fine but I can imagine them not being any use on a double stack with the forces against it

  5. Great video, thank you! Good to know as I start to plan out making a raised bed garden. Absolutely agree that music is NOT needed. I much prefer the hear you and the birds rather than any music.

  6. Gday, I live in the northwest and I’m looking for the right materials to make some raised garden beds, I can get straight pieces of corrugated, galvanised pieces. If I make a rectangle using a star picket on each side and then I need something non-wooden as my corner posts, the termites will kill it in a year… any ideas?
